Redox flow batteries (RFBs) are enjoying a renaissance due to their ability to store large amounts of electrical energy relatively cheaply and efficiently. In this review, we examine the components of RFBs with a focus on understanding the underlying physical processes. The various transport and kinetic phenomena are discussed along with the most common redox couples.

Microwave assisted synthesis – a critical technology overview

Fenton-like processes have been studied widely in recent years and are considered promising for organic wastewater treatment. Due to the demand for high efficiency wastewater treatment, a summary of the study status of Fenton-like processes is necessary to develop a novel and high efficiency organic wastewater treatment method. In this review, some important effect parameters (pH, H2O2 dosage, catalyst dosage, temperature) in hetero-/homo-geneous Fenton-like processes are discussed, and then the physical field/phenomenon-assisted hetero-/homo-geneous Fenton-like processes are presented. After that, catalyst types and the evaluation of wastewater treatment costs for various Fenton-like processes are summarized and discussed. Finally, possible future research directions and some guidelines for Fenton-like processes are given.

The influence of sulfate‐reducing bacteria on corrosion of mild steel is reviewed, with special emphasis on the effects of biofilm structure and function, medium composition (dissolved oxygen and ferrous ion concentrations) and the physical and chemical properties of iron sulfides. A summary of different corrosion mechanisms is critically discussed, based on electrochemical and rate process analyses. A mechanism is proposed which explains the high corrosion rates observed in the field.

Role of sulfate‐reducing bacteria in corrosion of mild steel: A review

Solubilities at 25 °C of four amino acids (l-cystine, l-tyrosine, l-leucine, and glycine) in aqueous solutions at various pHs and NaCl concentrations (0, 1, 3 mol dm-3) are reported. The pH was varied from 0 to 13 using HCl or NaOH. The NaCl concentration strongly affects the solubilities of l-cystine, l-tyrosine, and l-leucine. In particular, the addition of NaCl increases the l-cystine solubility but reduces the solubility of l-tyrosine and l-leucine. The NaCl concentration has only a slight effect on the solubility of glycine. Experimental solubilities are correlated with the use of a chemical equilibrium model, good agreement in the pH range 1−12 was found. The analysis confirms the dependence reported in the literature between the solubility of amino acids and the salt concentration. For the amino acids examined, the parameters to calculate their solubilities in solutions with NaCl are also given.

The properties of a carbon felt electrode have been experimentally investigated with special attention to its possible application in the electrochemical recovery of heavy metals. The mass transfer process has been studied by means of the reduction of ferricyanide and cupric ions for a flow-by electrode operating under limiting current conditions. An empirical correlation between the Sherwood and Reynolds numbers has been used to compare the experimental data with those obtained by other authors for different porous electrodes.

Behaviour of a carbon felt flow by electrodes Part I: Mass transfer characteristics

The consumption of phenol during its oxidation process in an aqueous solution containing ferrous ions and hydrogen peroxide (Fenton process) was studied in a microwave irradiated environment at a frequency of 2.45 GHz and at a power of 3 W for different Fe 2+ and phenol initial concentrations; the system was maintained at a constant temperature (25 °C). Experimental results were compared to those obtained in the same system and under the same experimental conditions, but in the absence of irradiation, in order to highlight non-thermal microwave magnetic effects on phenol degradation kinetics, as the temperature of the reacting system was strictly controlled and maintained at the fixed value. This comparison highlighted a great promoting effect of microwaves on the reaction rate not due to a thermal effect, resulting in an about tripled phenol consumption reaction rate; about the same increasing ratio was maintained for systems with the same ratio between ferrous ions and phenol initial concentrations. The authors think that coupling low power microwaves with other advanced oxidation processes for phenol removing, like the Fenton process, could be a very promising method, particularly with respect to costs, as energy consumption is very low if compared to the possible advantages.

Solubility of solid acetic acid in liquid organic solvents

The solubilities of four amino acids, l-cystine, l-tyrosine, l-leucine, and glycine, in aqueous solutions containing another amino acid have been measured at 298.15 K, 308.15 K, and 318.15 K. In aqueous solutions containing l-cystine and l-tyrosine, which have a low solubility, the solubility of the other amino acids is similar to that in pure water except for l-cystine in water + l-tyrosine. On the other hand, compared to their solubilities in pure water, in aqueous solutions containing glycine, which is quite soluble, a large variation in the solubilities of all the amino acids can be seen. Considerable variations in the solubility of l-cystine or l-tyrosine are observed in aqueous solutions containing l-leucine.
