Tetrathiafulvalenes, oligoacenenes, and their buckminsterfullerene derivatives: the brick and mortar of organic electronics.

Graphitic carbon nitrides (g-C3N4) are becoming increasingly significant due to the theoretical prediction of their unusual properties and promising applications ranging from photocatalysis, heterogeneous catalysis, to fuel cells. Recently, a variety of nanostructured and nanoporous g-C3N4 materials have been developed for a wide range of new applications. This feature article gives, at first, an overview on the synthesis of g-C3N4 nanomaterials with controllable structure and morphology, and secondly, presents and categorizes applications of g-C3N4 as multifunctional metal-free catalysts for environmental protection, energy conversion and storage. A special emphasis is placed on the potential applications of nanostructured g-C3N4 in the areas of artificial photocatalysis for hydrogen production, oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) for fuel cells, and metal-free heterogeneous catalysis. Finally, this perspective highlights crucial issues that should be addressed in the future in the aforementioned exciting research areas.

Graphitic carbon nitride materials: controllable synthesis and applications in fuel cells and photocatalysis

C-H oxidation has a long history and an ongoing presence in research at the forefront of chemistry and interrelated fields. As such, numerous highly useful articles and reviews have been written on this subject. Logically, these are generally written from the perspective of the scope and limitations of the reagents employed. This Minireview instead attempts to emphasize chemoselectivity imposed by the nature of the substrate. Consequently, many landmark discoveries in the field of C-H oxidation are not discussed, but hopefully the perspective taken herein will allow C-H oxidation reactions to be more readily incorporated into synthetic planning.

The condensation of glyoxal with benzylamine leads to 2,4,6,8,10,12-hexabenzyl-2,4,6,8,10,12-tetraazatetracyclo(5.5.0.0{sup 5,9}.0{sup 3,11})dodecane (2a) in solvents such as acetonitrile or methanol with formic acid catalyst. Six phenyl-substituted derivatives of 2a have been prepared and the scope of the reaction has been examined. Intermediates 1,2-bis(benzylamine)-1,2-ethanediol (6) and N,N{prime}-dibenzyl-1,2-ethanediimine (7) have been prepared and the mechanism of their conversion to 2a is discussed. In the absence of acid catalysts, the glyoxal hemiacetal derivative 2,3-dihydroxy-1,4-dioxane reacts with benzylamine or 4-pyridylmethylamine in acetonitrile solvent to produce 9,10-bis(arylmethyl)9,10-diaza-1,4,5,8-tetraoxaperhydroanthracenes 13a,b.
