IS 2010 Curriculum Guidelines for Undergraduate Degree Programs in Information Systems Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) Association for Information Systems (AIS)

The IS 2010 report is the latest output from model curriculum work for Information Systems (IS) that began in the early 1970s. Prior to this current effort, the most recent version of the IS undergraduate model curriculum is IS 2002 (Gorgone et al., 2003), published in early 2003. IS 2002 was a relatively minor update of IS'97 (Davis et al., 1997). Both IS 2002 and IS '97 were joint efforts by ACM, AIS, and DPMA/AITP (Data Processing Management Association/ Association of Information Technology Professionals). IS'97 was preceded by DPMA'90 (Longenecker and Feinstein 1991) and ACM Curriculum Recommendations 1983 (ACM 1983) and 1973 (Couger 1973). IS 2002 has been widely accepted and it has also been the basis for accreditation of undergraduate programs of Information Systems. This report represents the combined effort of numerous individuals and reflects the interests of thousands of faculty and practitioners. It is grounded in the expected requirements of industry, represents the views of organizations employing the graduates, and is supported by other IS-related organizations.

Curriculum Guidelines for Undergraduate Degree Programs in Information Systems

One dilemma with health claims is that too much information can confuse consumers and too little information can mislead them. Instead of using only one side of the package, a laboratory study is used to examine the effectiveness of various front-sided health claims when used in combination with a full health claim on the back panel. The results indicate that the presence of a short health claim on the front label generates more specific attribute-related thoughts, more inferences, and creates a more believable and positive image of the product in the consumers’ mind than does a longer health claim on the front label. This article concludes with a discussion of how labeling information needs to be presented to effectively allow consumers to understand and use claim information.

Information processing

In this article I generalize ecological theory by developing the notion of separate but linked ecologies. I characterize an ecology by its set of actors, its set of locations, and the relation it involves between these. I then develop two central concepts for the linkage of ecologies: hinges and avatars. The first are issues or strategies that ‘‘work’’ in both ecologies at once. The second are attempts to institutionalize in one ecology a copy or colony of an actor in another. The article investigates the first of these concepts using two detailed examples of hinge analysis between the professional and political ecologies. Both concern medical licensing, the first in 19th-century New York and the second in 19th-century England. For the avatar concept, the article analyzes four less detailed cases linking the professional and university ecologies: computer science, criminal justice, clinical psychology, and applied economics.

Contained in this report are the recommendations for the undergraduate degree program in Computer Science of the Curriculum Committee on Computer Science (C3S) of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM).The core curriculum common to all computer science undergraduate programs is presented in terms of elementary level topics and courses, and intermediate level courses. Elective courses, used to round out an undergraduate program, are then discussed, and the entire program including the computer science component and other material is presented. Issues related to undergraduate computer science education, such as service courses, supporting areas, continuing education, facilities, staff, and articulation are presented.

Recommendations for the Undergraduate Program in Computer Science

A bibliography of approximately two hundred references in computer science education appearing in the literature since the publication of “Curriculum '68” is presented. The bibliography itself is preceded by brief descriptive materials organizing the references into the categories of survey reports, activities of professional organizations, philosophy of programs, description of programs, description of courses and other materials.

Tables are presented giving the MTF of an aberrationless defocused lens with circular aperture for objects illuminated with incoherent monochromatic light. MTF values are given to six decimal places for reduced spatial frequencies νr = 0(0.01)1 and defocusing Δ = 0(0.1)0.4, 0.5(0.5)5, 10(5)50, except that 5/Δ is an upper limit on νr. Here Δ is measured in units of Rayleigh’s 
14λ tolerance on defocusing. The integral of the MTF and (MTF)2 are also given for Δ ≤ 5. The numerical integration was performed by Simpson’s rule over most of the range and by series expansion over the rest. An error analysis is appended. Tables of the line spread function for the focused case are also given.
