TL;DR: In this article, the spectral properties of the B800-850 antenna complex of Rhodopseudomonas sphaeroides were studied by comparing the spectra of several different types of complexes, isolated from chromatophores by means of the detergents lithium dodecyl sulfate (LDS) or lauryl dimethylamine N -oxide (LDAO).

TL;DR: The CD spectrum of isolated B875 indicates that the interactions between the BChls but not the carotenoids are altered upon isolation, and CD spectra appear to reflect the two spectral forms of B875 BChl in Rps.

TL;DR: Van Grondelle et al. as discussed by the authors showed that the bacteriochlorophyll (BChl) B800 content of the B800-850/LDAO complex can be improved by using lithium dodecyl sulfate.
Abstract: Rhodopseudomonas sphaeroides contains three major pigment-protein complexes, B800–850, B875 and reaction centers.B800–850 can be isolated by several procedures and its properties have been characterized rather extensively (Cogdell, Thornber, 1980; Clayton, Clayton, 1981; Breton et al., 1980; Van Grondelle et al., 1982, 1983). B800–850 isolated with lauryl dimethyl amine oxide (B800–850/LDAO) shows a high bacteriochlorophyll (BChl) B800 content and consists of large aggregates of several hundreds of connected BChl’s. However, the complex isolated by means of lithium dodecyl sulfate (B800–850/LDS) contains very little B800 and is much smaller, containing about 30 BChl’s (Van Grondelle et al., 1983). Upon exposure to LDAO the B800–850/LDS regains its normal B800 content (Clayton, Clayton, 1981).
