TL;DR: An ontological modeling framework of functional knowledge, which includes an ontology of device and function and a controlled vocabulary is developed, which has been successfully deployed in a manufacturing company in daily engineering activities.
Abstract: Functionality is one of the key concepts of knowledge about artifacts. Functional knowledge shows a part of designer's intention (so-called design rationale), and thus its sharing among engineers plays a crucial role in team-activities in engineering practice. Aiming at promoting engineering knowledge management, we have developed an ontological modeling framework of functional knowledge, which includes an ontology of device and function and a controlled vocabulary. This framework has been successfully deployed in a manufacturing company in daily engineering activities. In the first part of this paper, we discuss some ontological issues concerning the functionality of artifacts, and redefine the notion of function as a role. In the second part, we discuss some lessons learned in the actual deployment of this framework and two extensions based on such experience. One extension is a lexical layer for functional terms intended to help engineers select appropriate functional concepts and to facilitate the use of domain-specific terms familiar to them. The other extension is the establishment of ontological modeling guidelines, which help engineers commit to the relevant ontologies and describe models compliant with them.

TL;DR: A metadata schema relating to functionality based on Semantic Web technology for the management of the information content of engineering design documents is proposed, which enables us to annotate web-documents with RDF metadata, which represents devices as having specific functions.
Abstract: This paper proposes a metadata schema relating to functionality based on Semantic Web technology for the management of the information content of engineering design documents. The schema enables us to annotate web-documents with RDF metadata, which represents devices as having specific functions. The metadata provide a clear and operational semantics for the functional terms in documents. The metadata schema is based on our own functional ontologies, which we believe to provide effective guidelines for consistent functional annotation. These ontologies have been developed over many years and deployed successfully in industry. We then demonstrate a document search system using the metadata, which enables us to retrieve web-documents using the types of function and relationships defined in the schema rather than more superficial terms. Such function-oriented management of information is especially useful in the conceptual design phase. It allows one to find previous cases of the same function in earlier designs and to find related patents. We go on to discuss the following two issues on the interoperability of the functional knowledge. The first is automatic transformation of the functional model in our modeling framework into a chart-style form commonly used for the FMEA (Failure Modes and Effects Analysis) activity using a mapping between our ontology and an FMEA ontology. The second is translation of the functional model between our functional vocabulary and other taxonomy of function, that is, Functional Basis proposed by Stone et al. Another mapping between our functional vocabulary and Functional Basis can be done via a richer, generic reference ontology of functions. This mapping would aim at clarifying ontological differences between functional taxonomies and enabling translation between them.

TL;DR: A fundamental consideration of role concepts is made and characteristics ofrole concepts are shown as important and essential criteria for ontology evaluation.
Abstract: There are many approaches for Ontology Evaluation. We take an approach based on ontological theories for ontology content evaluation from them. In this approach, we need some criteria for judging whether an ontology is good or not. In this paper, we make a fundamental consideration of role concepts and show characteristics of role concepts as important and essential criteria for ontology evaluation.

TL;DR: This paper presents a framework for organizing roles according to their context dependencies, and especially focuses on defining and organizing compound roles, which depend on several contexts.
Abstract: The establishment of a computational framework of roles contributes effectively to the management of instance models because it provides us with a useful policy for treatment of views and contexts related to roles. In our research, we have developed an ontology building environment, which provides a framework for representation of roles and their characteristics. In this paper, as an extension of the framework, we present a framework for organizing roles according to their context dependencies. We especially focus on defining and organizing compound roles, which depend on several contexts.

TL;DR: This work constructs a conceptual structure based on ontology to help the interaction analysis and the learning design and shows how it is possible to analyze and design effective collaborative learning sessions proposing tasks and goals with justification by learning theories.
Abstract: To evaluate the teaching-learning process in collaborative learning sessions and its educational benefits for learners, we should analyze the interaction process during each session and select appropriate learning goals and tasks for each learner. However, the interaction process is very difficult to analyze, even for experts, and furthermore choosing appropriate goals/tasks can be even more challenging. The main objective of our work is to construct a conceptual structure based on ontology to help the interaction analysis and the learning design. We aim to make the tacit benefits for the learners explicit identifying the relationships among interactions and educational benefits. Through this conceptual structure we show how it is possible to analyze and design effective collaborative learning sessions proposing tasks and goals with justification by learning theories.

TL;DR: The goal of this research is to realize a task-oriented menu system which enables more efficient mobile services and eliminates the need to translate “what they want to do” to “name of the menu” before getting mobile services they want.
Abstract: We can get many kinds of mobile services via mobile handsets in Japan. According to an annual report by NTT DoCoMo [1], Japan's premier mobile communications company which manages mobile internet services and occupies about 58% of the market, we have more than 89,000 service sites today. On the other hand, a large number of services cause difficulties in searching, finding and selecting suitable services for consumer's needs. One of the reasons for the difficulties is that menus of the current mobile services are organized from the viewpoint of the domain. Users have to learn the menu system to access the services; hierarchical structure of the menu, relation between name of the category and services in the category. If a user wants to catch the last train, for example, such a domain-oriented menu will guide him/her as follows: “menu”, “latest information”, “traffic”, “train information”, “timetable” and “input start station name”. The user follows the menu and finally reaches the service that provides information about timetable. As this example shows, users have to translate “what they want to do” to “name of the menu” before getting mobile services they want. On the other hand, there is another type of menu which we call “task-oriented menu” [2]. The goal of this research is to realize a task-oriented menu system which enables more efficient mobile

TL;DR: A system that reconstructs the resources according to the various viewpoints expressed in the ontology of IT education goals is presented and an ontology alignment framework is proposed.
Abstract: In Japan, the interest in IT education is continuously growing. Most goals of the IT education involve metaability, which cannot be learned by the traditional Japanese instructional methods. It is difficult to design effective IT education material. Moreover, there are only a few specialists in IT education. For this reason, it is necessary and important to provide IT instructors with a powerful help system that can locate and provide access to a variety of useful information resources. We present a system that reconstructs the resources according to the various viewpoints expressed in the ontology of IT education goals. Further, we propose an ontology alignment framework.

TL;DR: An ontological definition of the concept of function from a device-centered viewpoint is discussed and a metadata schema based on the functional ontologies for functional annotation in the Semantic Web is proposed.
Abstract: This research aims at promoting sharing of knowledge about functionality of artifacts among engineers, which tends to be implicit in practice. In order to provide a conceptual viewpoint for modeling and a controlled vocabulary, we have developed an ontological framework of functional knowledge. This framework has been successfully deployed in a manufacturing company. This paper firstly discusses an ontological definition of the concept of function from a device-centered viewpoint. Then, other types of function are discussed in order to place our definition in the related concepts in the literature. Next, as an application of the ontologies, we propose a metadata schema based on the functional ontologies for functional annotation in the Semantic Web. The functional metadata annotated to technical documents show designers intentions behind the documents and contribute to efficient retrieval of the documents. Moreover, task-oriented transformation and interoperability with other schemata can be realized based on the ontologies.

TL;DR: Using the example of meeting someone for the first time, how cultural differences can be at play in this process is illustrated, and ontological engineering (OE) is briefly introduced and how an authoring/learning management system (LMS) might work is illustrated.
Abstract: This paper describes aspects of a research in progress. The research is concerned with identifying various forms of L1 interference in the process of acquiring L2, namely in terms of cultural differences, and the difficulties these might create for students. We are also working on instructional strategies and activities to help overcome such difficulties. We aim to map this information in an authoring/learning management system (LMS) that could assist both teachers and students, using ontological engineering (OE), a knowledge management methodology. In this paper, using the example of meeting someone for the first time, we illustrate how cultural differences can be at play in this process, briefly introduce OE and illustrate how our LMS might work.

TL;DR: What is cross-linguistic influence, a concrete example of what it might entail, and briefly explain how the system might work along with the research methodology are described.
Abstract: This research project aims to design a CALL system (Computer-Assisted Language Learning). The goal of the system is to help users overcome cross-linguistic difficulties, that is to say, transfer and interference stemming from a native language (L1) in the process of acquiring a second or foreign language (L2). It is built following an ontological engineering methodology, which is well-known in the artificial intelligence community. In this article, we describe what is cross-linguistic influence, provide a concrete example of what it might entail, and briefly explain how the system might work along with our research methodology.

TL;DR: A Goal Transition Model is proposed to show a skeleton of the transition of instructional goals based on ontologies and a system that provides teachers with lesson plans effectively by applying this Model is built.
Abstract: In Japan, the “Period of Integrated Study” program began in elementary and secondary education in 2002. The “Period of Integrated Study” program emphasizes cultivating the ability to solve various problems in society. Most goals of this program involve meta-ability, which cannot be fully learned by traditional Japanese instructional methods. For this reason, it is necessary and important to provide instructors with a powerful help system that can locate and provide access to a variety of useful information resources. To this end, we have proposed a framework that reconstructs the resources according to various viewpoints based on Semantic Web technology. Further, we proposed a Goal Transition Model to show a skeleton of the transition of instructional goals based on ontologies and built a system that provides teachers with lesson plans effectively by applying this Model. In this paper, we describe support functions of this system and report results of an experiment carried out for evaluation of the functions.

TL;DR: A conceptualization of collaborative workplace ontology was made based on group formation and interaction in terms of knowledge management theory and learning theory, and the patterns described enabled to distinguish between the two.
Abstract: As organizations evolve, it is not only important to design a collaborative workplace in which important knowledge, skill and competence are created and inherited, but also make sure that the necessary capabilities for creating and inheriting these exist. The design of such a workplace can be a series of challenges. One of the reasons is that practical and educational viewpoints must come together. The aim of this research is to conceptualize and support the design of a collaborative workplace that blends both these viewpoints within a computerized support system. To achieve this goal, we propose a collaborative workplace ontology, which we then use to describe collaborative workplace patterns. A conceptualization of collaborative workplace ontology was made based on group formation and interaction in terms of knowledge management theory and learning theory, as well as in terms of the implicit assumptions the theories appear to make in these regards. The collaborative workplace patterns, based on the preceding conceptualization, while blending practical and educational considerations, also enabled to distinguish between the two. This research is consequently concerned with the development of a support system for the design and development of a collaborative workplace.
