In Defense of Negativity: Attack Ads in Presidential Campaigns. By John G. Geer. Chicago: University of Chicago Press, 2006. 218p. $47.50 cloth, $19.00 paper. This book begins with a series of quotes from scholars and media pundits arguing that negative political advertisements are uncivil, mean-spirited, emotion-laden distortions of the truth, which not only smear their target but also mislead voters and undermine the political process itself; in short, they are the scourge of democracy. Or so the conventional wisdom goes. But John Geer asks us to reject the starting assumption that attack ads are bad. In fact, he argues that democracy requires candidates to attack each other. His argument is simple but powerful: All advertisements, by their very nature, exaggerate the truth. But this point applies equally to negative and positive ads. We cannot expect political candidates to fairly discuss their weaknesses along with their strengths. That is the role of the opposition, and it can only be done by offering criticisms of the opposing candidate or party. The real questions, then, are 1) whether negative ads perform their role effectively, or instead distort and confuse the vote choices citizens must make; and 2) whether attack ads, in performing a role that seems to be required of them, nonetheless undermine the democratic political system of which they are a crucial part.

As child-robot interaction (CRI) is still a young and rather dispersed field, it largely lacks conceptual and operational definitions of variables relevant to CRI. In our current study, we aim to develop and validate a set of standardized self-report survey measures relevant for CRI research. By means of these standardized self-report measures we hope to increase the conclusive power of individual studies and comparability across studies.

Children and social robots: Inventory of measures for CRI research

Research indicates that reality TV viewing frequency and involvement with reality TV are linked. However, previous studies employed cross-sectional designs and were carried out among college students and general adult population, but not among the most frequent consumers of reality TV: adolescents. To better understand the causal link between this demographic segment’s reality TV viewing and involvement, we conducted a longitudinal study among 392 adolescents (ages 15 to 17). Frequency of reality TV viewing increased narrative engagement, parasocial interaction, emotional empathy, merging with the characters, wishful identification, perceived realism, and enjoyment of reality TV six months later. No reverse effects on viewing existed.

From Admiration to Devotion? The Longitudinal Relation between Adolescents’ Involvement with and Viewing Frequency of Reality TV

Many theories in political communication embrace the idea that relation- ships and phenomena need to be studied across contexts, in different coun- tries, or over time. For instance, researchers have investigated phenomena across cultures, such as differences in media effects (Peter, 2004), in media content or in journalistic cultures (Esser, 2008). Other prominent research has focused on the change of phenomena, such as media effects over time (Boomgarden and de Vreese, 2006). Another important line of commu- nication scholarship explores the role of different thematic contexts, for example in election studies (Kriesi, 2011). Inherent in all these avenues of research is the belief that we need to compare across contexts in order to come to valid and meaningful conclusions about our theories on the one hand and about real-world phenomena on the other. However, despite the relevance of comparison for communication research, scholars have largely neglected to consider the methodological issues it raises. This is surprising because there are established methodological tools that allow us to test whether a comparison is valid (Davidov et al., 2011; Harkness et al., 2003; Millsap, 2011; Vandenberg and Lance, 2000). More specifically, comparisons across contexts, cultures, or over time require measurement invariance: that is, the equivalence of measures of constructs in these different contexts.
