In The Rime of the Ancient Mariner, Samuel Taylor Coleridge wrote of a sailor who, having shot an albatross of good luck and brought misfortune to his ship, was forced to wear the bird’s carcass about his neck. In this essay I want to examine a journalistic albatross-the critical function of the press. I will argue simply that our definition of social responsibility, grounded in an adulation of objectivity, is insufficient. I will further argue that a broader and more socially relevant definition would lead to a redefinition of the role of the journalist as a reflective and uncompromising critic of American life, power and status at an institutional level. This, in turn, would suggest the necessity of re-evaluating the role of the university and professional journalism schools as the principal institutions charged with training future journalists. Accomplishing this task requires that I construct an argument premised in both the social nature of journalism and of ethical practice. I contend here that we have lost these roots and have replaced them with an unsatisfactory substitute-professionalism. Robert S. Fortner, Ph. D. , is a visiting assistant professor in the School of Journalism at Drake University, Des Moines, Iowa. Richard L. Hoag is an assistant professor in the School of Architecture at Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University and a doctoral candidate in the Institute of Communications Research at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. James W. Carey, in an essay published a little over a decade ago, defined a professional communicator as &dquo;one who controls a specific skill to forge a link between distinct persons or differentiated groups. A professional communicator is a broker in symbols, one who translates the attitudes, knowledge, and concerns of one speech community into alternative but suasive and understandable terms for another community&dquo; (Carey, 1969: 27). Although Carey dealt principally with the journalist as professional communicator, his elaboration of the role of this functionary as the conversion of messages, ideas and purposes of a source &dquo;into a symbolic strategy designed to inform or persuade an ultimate audience,&dquo; also could be extended easily to cover the activities of public relations, advertising and political experts (among others) who are responsible for interpreting events in essentially non-intellectual and uncritical ways, using strategies grounded in technical expertise (Carey, 1969: 28,32). This article provides empirical evidence as a basis for suggesting that Carey’s characterization of professional communicators is correct, and for extending his characterization to others outside the communications industry.
