Journal ArticleDOI
Endothelial glycocalyx shedding and vascular permeability in severely injured trauma patients
Elaheh Rahbar,Elaheh Rahbar,Jessica C. Cardenas,Gyulnar Baimukanova,Benjamin Usadi,Roberta Bruhn,Shibani Pati,Shibani Pati,Sisse R. Ostrowski,Pär I. Johansson,John B. Holcomb,Charles E. Wade +11 more
TL;DR: Glycocalyx components were shed more in trauma patients compared to healthy controls in this cohort of trauma patients, and data suggest that low plasma COP correlates well to glycocalyx degradation and thrombin loss following trauma, which consequently affect permeability and coagulation.
Journal ArticleDOI
Low bone density and high percentage of body fat among men who were treated with androgen deprivation therapy for prostate carcinoma.
TL;DR: The prevalence and magnitude of low bone density and obesity among men with prostate carcinoma who were treated with androgen deprivation therapy who were examined in a case–control study.
Journal ArticleDOI
High Incidence of Chikungunya Virus and Frequency of Viremic Blood Donations during Epidemic, Puerto Rico, USA, 2014
Graham Simmons,Vanessa Brès,Kai Lu,Nathan M. Liss,Donald Brambilla,Kyle R. Ryff,Roberta Bruhn,Edwin Velez,Derrek Ocampo,Jeffrey M. Linnen,Gerardo Latoni,Lyle R. Petersen,Phillip C. Williamson,Michael P. Busch +13 more
TL;DR: Deaths were rarely observed, but newborns and other vulnerable populations are at risk for severe complications.
Journal ArticleDOI
Effect of donor, component, and recipient characteristics on hemoglobin increments following red blood cell transfusion.
Nareg Roubinian,Nareg Roubinian,Colleen Plimier,Jennifer P. Woo,Catherine Lee,Roberta Bruhn,Vincent X. Liu,Gabriel J. Escobar,Steven Kleinman,Darrell J. Triulzi,Edward L. Murphy,Michael P. Busch +11 more
TL;DR: Donor and recipient sex, Rh-D status, collection method, gamma irradiation, recipient age and body mass index, and pre-transfusion hemoglobin levels were significant predictors of hemoglobin increments in univariate and multivariable analyses.
Journal ArticleDOI
Demographic and epidemiologic characterization of transfusion recipients from four US regions: evidence from the REDS-III recipient database.
Matthew S. Karafin,Roberta Bruhn,Matt Westlake,Marian T. Sullivan,Walter Bialkowski,Gustaf Edgren,Nareg Roubinian,Ronald G. Hauser,Daryl J. Kor,Debra Fleischmann,Jerome L. Gottschall,Edward L. Murphy,Darrell J. Triulzi,Donor Evaluation Study-III +13 more
TL;DR: A multicenter database containing detailed information on transfusion incidence and recipient outcomes would facilitate research to understand the benefits of transfusion while mitigating potential risks.
