This handbook looks to provide academics and students with a comprehensive and holistic understanding of the phenomenon of innovation. Innovation spans a number of fields within the social sciences and humanities: Management, Economics, Geography, Sociology, Politics, Psychology, and History. Consequently, the rapidly increasing body of literature on innovation is characterized by a multitude of perspectives based on, or cutting across, existing disciplines and specializations. The Oxford Handbook of Innovation

Are trust and risk important in consumers' electronic commerce purchasing decisions? What are the antecedents of trust and risk in this context? How do trust and risk affect an Internet consumer's purchasing decision? To answer these questions, we i) develop a theoretical framework describing the trust-based decision-making process a consumer uses when making a purchase from a given site, ii) test the proposed model using a Structural Equation Modeling technique on Internet consumer purchasing behavior data collected via a Web survey, and iii) consider the implications of the model. The results of the study show that Internet consumers' trust and perceived risk have strong impacts on their purchasing decisions. Consumer disposition to trust, reputation, privacy concerns, security concerns, the information quality of the Website, and the company's reputation, have strong effects on Internet consumers' trust in the Website. Interestingly, the presence of a third-party seal did not strongly influence consumers' trust.

Models that depict innovation as a smooth, well-behaved linear process badly misspecify the nature and direction of the causal factors at work. Innovation is complex, uncertain, somewhat disorderly, and subject to changes of many sorts. Innovation is also difficult to measure and demands close coordination of adequate technical knowledge and excellent market judgment in order to satisfy economic, technological, and other types of constraints—all simultaneously. The process of innovation must be viewed as a series of changes in a complete system not only of hardware, but also of market environment, production facilities and knowledge, and the social contexts of the innovation organization.

An Overview of Innovation

This article focuses on entrepreneurship in economic geography and aims at a systematic investigation of regional variation in knowledge-based entrepreneurial activity. We develop and test a three-phase structural model forregional systems of entrepreneurshipafter introducing a systems approach to entrepreneurship. The model is built upon the absorptive capacity theory of knowledge spillover entrepreneurship that identifies new knowledge as one source of entrepreneurial opportunities and human capital as the major source of entrepreneurial absorptive capacity. Based on data of US metropolitan areas, we find that entrepreneurial absorptive capacity is a critical driving force for knowledge-based entrepreneurial activity. We also find that high technology and cultural diversity contribute to the vibrancy of regional systems of entrepreneurship.

The second edition of this book is completely reedited making the book even more valuable for graduate students, reflecting recent advances and adding insightful new material. The book is about the analysis of regional economic performance and change, and how analysis integrates with strategies for local and regional economic development policy and planning. First, the book provides the reader with an overview of key theoretical and conceptual contexts within which the economic development process takes place. However, the deliberate emphasis is to provide the reader with an account of quantitative and qualitative approaches to regional economic analysis and of old and new strategic frameworks for formulating regional economic development planning. The second edition brings to the present its original thesis about the need for regions to be fast and flexible, but also to be proactive in order to be prepared to experience increasingly greater shocks while having less time to adjust their economic development to achieve sustainability. This is underscored by events that have occurred since 2001: 9/11 terrorist attacks, continuing rapid advances in technology, the rise China and India, the Tsunami, and all the known on-going and unforeseen risks and challenges that confront nations around the globe and the regions and localities within them. The rapid developments in information and communication technologies (ICTs) and the increased use of ICTs motivate the vision of an evolving digital economy. ICTs are composed of a wide range of product and service technologies including computer hardware, software and services and a host of telecommunications functions that include wire or wireline, and wireless, satellite products and services. The rapid diffusion of ICTs has produced important changes in how goods and services are produced, the nature of the goods and services produced, and the means by which goods and services are brought to the market and distributed to customers. During the last decade this evolving digital economy has been the preeminent driver of structural change and economic growth at both the national and the regional level in the developed, industrialised economies. However, there are substantial differences among countries and regions as regards their role in the development of ICTs and their propensity to adopt and apply ICTs applications in various sectors and activities. Hence, countries and regions differ markedly in how far they have come on the road to the digital economy. The emerging digital economy has attracted much interest in recent years and various authors have used different concepts to characterise the new developments. Besides the digital economy we also find in the literature concepts such as e-economy (Cohen et al. 2000) and information economy1. In the more popular debate it also has been nicknamed “the new economy” (Castells 1996, p.66).
