Journal ArticleDOI
The photosynthetic capacity in 35 ferns and fern allies: mesophyll CO2 diffusion as a key trait
Tiina Tosens,Keisuke Nishida,Jorge Gago,Rafael E. Coopman,Hernán M. Cabrera,Marc Carriquí,Lauri Laanisto,Loreto V. Morales,Miquel Nadal,Roke Rojas,Eero Talts,Magdalena Tomás,Yuko T. Hanba,Ülo Niinemets,Jaume Flexas +14 more
TL;DR: Low mesophyll conductance to CO2 was the main cause for low photosynthesis in ferns and fern allies, which, in turn, was associated with thick cell walls and reduced chloroplast distribution towards intercellular mesophyLL air spaces.
Journal ArticleDOI
Photosynthetic responses of trees in high-elevation forests: comparing evergreen species along an elevation gradient in the Central Andes
TL;DR: This study focused on the photosynthetic responses of Polylepis species and how they are able to cope with such a challenging environment as low temperatures, high solar radiation and water scarcity.
Journal ArticleDOI
Sprouting extends the regeneration niche in temperate rain forests: The case of the long-lived tree Eucryphia cordifolia
TL;DR: It is proposed that niche differentiation between sprouts and saplings extends the regeneration niche to suboptimal conditions for sexual recruitment and contributes toward explaining the high colonization ability of E. cordifolia in this kind of forest, whose composition is strongly driven by gap dynamics.
Journal ArticleDOI
Acclimation of leaf cohorts expanded under light and water stresses: an adaptive mechanism of Eucryphia cordifolia to face changes in climatic conditions?
Loreto V. Morales,Rafael E. Coopman,Roke Rojas,Antonio B. Escandón,Jaume Flexas,Jeroni Galmés,José Ignacio García-Plazaola,Jorge Gago,Hernán M. Cabrera,Luis J. Corcuera +9 more
TL;DR: It is suggested that the acclimation of the photosynthetic capacity among current leaf cohorts represents a well-tuned mechanism helping E. cordifolia seedlings to face a single stress like shade or drought stress, but is insufficient to cope with simultaneous stresses.
Journal ArticleDOI
Physiological differences between root suckers and saplings enlarge the regeneration niche in Eucryphia cordifolia Cav
Antonio B. Escandón,Roke Rojas,Loreto V. Morales,Luis J. Corcuera,Rafael E. Coopman,Susana Paula +5 more
TL;DR: The physiological differences between sexual and vegetative recruits satisfactorily explain the ecological niche of E. cordifolia, with saplings restricted to more closed and humid sites.
