We present k.p Hamiltonians parametrized by ab initio density functional theory calculations to describe the dispersion of the valence and conduction bands at their extrema (the K , Q , Γ , and M points of the hexagonal Brillouin zone) in atomic crystals of semiconducting monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs). We discuss the parametrization of the essential parts of the k.p[ Hamiltonians for MoS2 , MoSe2 , MoTe2 , WS2 , WSe2 , and WTe2 , including the spin-splitting and spin-polarization of the bands, and we briefly review the vibrational properties of these materials. We then use k.p theory to analyse optical transitions in two-dimensional TMDCs over a broad spectral range that covers the Van Hove singularities in the band structure (the M points). We also discuss the visualization of scanning tunnelling microscopy maps.

Two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs), an emerging family of layered materials, have provided researchers a fertile ground for harvesting fundamental science and emergent applications. TMDs can contain a number of different structural defects in their crystal lattices which significantly alter their physico-chemical properties. Having structural defects can be either detrimental or beneficial, depending on the targeted application. Therefore, a comprehensive understanding of structural defects is required. Here we review different defects in semiconducting TMDs by summarizing: (i) the dimensionalities and atomic structures of defects; (ii) the pathways to generating structural defects during and after synthesis and, (iii) the effects of having defects on the physico-chemical properties and applications of TMDs. Thus far, significant progress has been made, although we are probably still witnessing the tip of the iceberg. A better understanding and control of defects is important in order to move forward the field of Defect Engineering in TMDs. Finally, we also provide our perspective on the challenges and opportunities in this emerging field.

Defect engineering of two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides

We have examined the crystallographic and magnetic properties of single crystals of CrI3, an easily cleavable, layered and insulating ferromagnet with a Curie temperature of 61 K. Our X-ray diffraction studies reveal a first-order crystallographic phase transition occurring near 210–220 K upon warming, with significant thermal hysteresis. The low-temperature structure is rhombohedral (R3, BiI3-type) and the high-temperature structure is monoclinic (C2/m, AlCl3-type). We find evidence for coupling between the crystallographic and magnetic degrees of freedom in CrI3, observing an anomaly in the interlayer spacing at the Curie temperature and an anomaly in the magnetic susceptibility at the structural transition. First-principles calculations reveal the importance of proper treatment of the long-ranged interlayer forces, and van der Waals density functional theory does an excellent job of predicting the crystal structures and their relative stability. Coupling of Crystal Structure and Magnetism in the Layered, Ferromagnetic Insulator CrI3

A few-layer MoS2 photodetector driven by poly(vinylidene fluoride-trifluoroethylene) ferroelectrics is achieved. The detectivity and responsitivity are up to 2.2 × 10(12) Jones and 2570 A W(-1), respectively, at 635 nm with ZERO gate bias. E(g) of MoS2 is tuned by the ultrahigh electrostatic field from the ferroelectric polarization. The photoresponse wavelengths of the photodetector are extended into the near-infrared (0.85-1.55 μm).

Two-dimensional MoS2: Properties, preparation, and applications

Due to the recent expanding interest in two-dimensional layered materials, molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) has been receiving much research attention. Having an ultrathin layered structure and an appreciable direct band gap of 1.9 eV in the monolayer regime, few-layer MoS2 has good potential applications in nanoelectronics, optoelectronics, and flexible devices. In addition, the capability of controlling spin and valley degrees of freedom makes it a promising material for spintronic and valleytronic devices. In this review, we attempt to provide an overview of the research relevant to the structural and physical properties, fabrication methods, and electronic devices of few-layer MoS2. Recent developments and advances in studying the material are highlighted.
