High-resolution representations are essential for position-sensitive vision problems, such as human pose estimation, semantic segmentation, and object detection. Existing state-of-the-art frameworks first encode the input image as a low-resolution representation through a subnetwork that is formed by connecting high-to-low resolution convolutions \emph{in series} (e.g., ResNet, VGGNet), and then recover the high-resolution representation from the encoded low-resolution representation. Instead, our proposed network, named as High-Resolution Network (HRNet), maintains high-resolution representations through the whole process. There are two key characteristics: (i) Connect the high-to-low resolution convolution streams \emph{in parallel}; (ii) Repeatedly exchange the information across resolutions. The benefit is that the resulting representation is semantically richer and spatially more precise. We show the superiority of the proposed HRNet in a wide range of applications, including human pose estimation, semantic segmentation, and object detection, suggesting that the HRNet is a stronger backbone for computer vision problems. In this paper, we propose a novel image dehazing method. Typical deep learning models for dehazing are trained on paired synthetic indoor dataset. Therefore, these models may be effective for indoor image dehazing but less so for outdoor images. We propose a heterogeneous Generative Adversarial Networks (GAN) based method composed of a cycle-consistent Generative Adversarial Networks (CycleGAN) for producing haze-clear images and a conditional Generative Adversarial Networks (cGAN) for preserving textural details. We introduce a novel loss function in the training of the fused network to minimize GAN generated artifacts, to recover fine details, and to preserve color components. These networks are fused via a convolutional neural network (CNN) to generate dehazed image. Extensive experiments demonstrate that the proposed method significantly outperforms the state-of-the-art methods on both synthetic and real-world hazy images.

Fusion of Heterogeneous Adversarial Networks for Single Image Dehazing

Recently, there has been rapid and significant progress on image dehazing. Many deep learning based methods have shown their superb performance in handling homogeneous dehazing problems. However, we observe that even if a carefully designed convolutional neural network (CNN) can perform well on large-scaled dehazing benchmarks, the network usually fails on the non-homogeneous dehazing datasets introduced by NTIRE challenges. The reasons are mainly in two folds. Firstly, due to its non-homogeneous nature, the non-uniformly distributed haze is harder to be removed than the homogeneous haze. Secondly, the research challenge only provides limited data (there are only 25 training pairs in NH-Haze 2021 dataset). Thus, learning the mapping from the domain of hazy images to that of clear ones based on very limited data is extremely hard. To this end, we propose a simple but effective approach for non-homogeneous dehazing via ensemble learning. To be specific, we introduce a two-branch neural network to separately deal with the aforementioned problems and then map their distinct features by a learnable fusion tail. A Two-branch Neural Network for Non-homogeneous Dehazing via Ensemble Learning

Most of the existing deep learning-based dehazing methods are trained and evaluated on the image dehazing datasets, where the dehazed images are generated by only exploiting the information from the corresponding hazy ones. On the other hand, video dehazing algorithms, which can acquire more satisfying dehazing results by exploiting the temporal redundancy from neighborhood hazy frames, receive less attention due to the absence of the video dehazing datasets. Therefore, we propose the first REal-world VIdeo DEhazing (REVIDE) dataset which can be used for the supervised learning of the video dehazing algorithms. By utilizing a well-designed video acquisition system, we can capture paired real-world hazy and haze-free videos that are perfectly aligned by recording the same scene (with or without haze) twice. Considering the challenge of exploiting temporal redundancy among the hazy frames, we also develop a Confidence Guided and Improved Deformable Network (CG-IDN) for video dehazing. The experiments demonstrate that the hazy scenes in the REVIDE dataset are more realistic than the synthetic datasets and the proposed algorithm also performs favorably against state-of-the-art dehazing methods.

Learning to Restore Hazy Video: A New Real-World Dataset and A New Method

This paper reviews the second NTIRE challenge on image dehazing (restoration of rich details in hazy image) with focus on proposed solutions and results. The training data consists from 55 hazy images (with dense haze generated in an indoor or outdoor environment) and their corresponding ground truth (haze-free) images of the same scene. The dense haze has been produced using a professional haze/fog generator that imitates the real conditions of haze scenes. The evaluation consists from the comparison of the dehazed images with the ground truth images. The dehazing process was learnable through provided pairs of haze-free and hazy train images. There were ~ 270 registered participants and 23 teams competed in the final testing phase. They gauge the state-of-the-art in image dehazing.
