The invention relates to a method for a handover of a mobile node from a non-3GPP to a 3GPP network, and of a mobile node, which is located in a non-3GPP/ 3GPP network. The handover is improved by discovering an appropriate MME and registering the mobile node at the discovered MME, in advance . This includes to first determine the location of the mobile node in the non-3GPP network, so as to be able to detect an MME in the vicinity of the mobile node's location. The 3GPP contexts are then transmitted to the new MME before the handover is performed. Moreover, the invention teaches to change the Serving-Gateway in the 3GPP network before performing a handover, thereby accelerating the handover. When a handover gets likely, the mobile node's location is determined and a new Serving-Gateway is selected. The data path is changed to go via the new Serving-Gateway.

The interworking of different radio access technologies aimed at providing always the best service to mobile users is the future of wireless communications. Many researchers are already investigating appropriate architectural solutions, coexistence problems, common radio resource management algorithms and other topics concerning this issue. In this paper we illustrate a simulation platform developed in our research group to investigate the performance and to test new management strategies of such interworking networks. Our purpose, however, is not to show the details of our tool, that would be useless for the reader; we aim, on the contrary, at providing those researchers who are facing the realization of a similar simulation tool with the main general criteria to develop a flexible and efficient simulation platform.

SHINE: Simulation platform for Heterogeneous Interworking Networks

In 3G-WLAN overlay network environments, a UE is apt to lose the WLAN signal without any notice by moving while it connects to WLAN because it can be apart from the WLAN coverage suddenly. In this case the on-going services are disrupted by unexpected link corruption. Hence, it needs to execute quickly the handover to 3G network as soon as it detects the lost of WLAN signal. However, as the 3G access has many network signaling operations additionally including IP mobility operations for service continuity, it requests more enough processing time for the operations, which increases the handover latency causing the service interruption. Therefore it is important to predict the time when the UE will get out of the WLAN coverage. By the handover prediction, the UE can prepare the connection to 3G network before breaking off the WLAN connection. This paper shows several handover prediction algorithms to reduce the handover latency by fast handover triggering. The correctness of the algorithms is compared by simulation.

Handover prediction strategy for 3G-WLAN overlay networks

Interoperation of different fixed and mobile networks is one key feature of systems beyond 3G, specifically between wireless local area networks, covering hot-spots with high data rates, and mobile cellular systems with full coverage. This comprises the vertical handover, i.e. the handover between systems with different air-interfaces, which are investigated in the paper. In contrast to several approaches that investigate solutions for the IP layer, the focus of the paper is on mechanisms on the link layer to improve the handover, respectively scanning other air-interfaces, measurements and appropriate triggers from the link layer that are considered in the handover decision process. Finally, the benefits for the handover performance are indicated and the potential of the proposed new concepts is highlighted.
