Journal ArticleDOI

A negative staining method for high resolution electron microscopy of viruses.

TL;DR: A simple technique has been developed for the study of the external form and structure of virus particles by mixing virus preparations with 1% phosphotungstic acid adjusted to pH 7.5 and spraying directly onto electron microscope supporting films made from evaporated carbon.
Journal ArticleDOI

Structural components of bacteriophage

TL;DR: Fingerprints confirm the previous finding that the head membrane of the phage is composed of a large number of repeated subunits with a molecular weight of 80,000 and show that the proteins composing the head, sheath and tail fibres of thephage have different primary structures.
Book ChapterDOI

Physiological aspects of bacteriophage genetics.

TL;DR: The experimental evidence discussed in this chapter leads to the conclusion that two complementary activities take place in the reproduction of bacteriophage: the replication of the genetic material to ensure genetic continuity of the virus and the specification by the genome of a multiplicity of functions which are necessary for successful passage of the phage through its growth cycle.
