This -integral made it possible to formulate a variational principle for the force-free magnetic fields. The nitrogen-vacancy (NV) colour centre in diamond is an important physical system for emergent quantum technologies, including quantum metrology, information processing and communications, as well as for various nanotechnologies, such as biological and sub-diffraction limit imaging, and for tests of entanglement in quantum mechanics. Given this array of existing and potential applications and the almost 50 years of NV research, one would expect that the physics of the centre is well understood, however, the study of the NV centre has proved challenging, with many early assertions now believed false and many remaining issues yet to be resolved. This review represents the first time that the key empirical and ab initio results have been extracted from the extensive NV literature and assembled into one consistent picture of the current understanding of the centre. As a result, the key unresolved issues concerning the NV centre are identified and the possible avenues for their resolution are examined.

The nitrogen-vacancy colour centre in diamond

Nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers in millimeter-scale diamond samples were produced by irradiation and subsequent annealing under varied conditions. The optical and spin-relaxation properties of these samples were characterized using confocal microscopy, visible and infrared absorption, and optically detected magnetic resonance. The sample with the highest ${\text{NV}}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ concentration, approximately 16 ppm $(2.8\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{18}\text{ }{\text{cm}}^{\ensuremath{-}3})$, was prepared with no observable traces of neutrally charged vacancy defects. The effective transverse spin-relaxation time for this sample was ${T}_{2}^{\ensuremath{\ast}}=118(48)\text{ }\text{ns}$, predominately limited by residual paramagnetic nitrogen which was determined to have a concentration of 49(7) ppm. Under ideal conditions, the shot-noise limited sensitivity is projected to be $\ensuremath{\sim}150\text{ }\text{fT}/\sqrt{\text{Hz}}$ for a $100\text{ }\ensuremath{\mu}\text{m}$-scale magnetometer based on this sample. Other samples with ${\text{NV}}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ concentrations from 0.007 to 12 ppm and effective relaxation times ranging from 27 to over 291 ns were prepared and characterized.

Diamonds with a high density of nitrogen-vacancy centers for magnetometry applications

We present an experimental study of the longitudinal electron-spin relaxation time (T1) of negatively charged nitrogen-vacancy (NV) ensembles in diamond. T1 was studied as a function of temperature from 5 to 475 K and magnetic field from 0 to 630 G for several samples with various NV and nitrogen concentrations. Our studies reveal three processes responsible for T1 relaxation. Above room temperature, a two-phonon Raman process dominates; below room temperature, we observe an Orbach-type process with an activation energy of 73(4) meV, which closely matches the local vibrational modes of the NV center. At yet lower temperatures, sample dependent cross-relaxation processes dominate, resulting in temperature independent values of T1 from milliseconds to minutes. The value of T1 in this limit depends sensitively on the magnetic field and can be tuned by more than 1 order of magnitude.
