Drought stress results in significant crop yield losses. Comparative transcriptome analysis between tolerant and sensitive species can provide insights into drought tolerance mechanisms in jute. We present a comprehensive study on drought tolerance in two jute species—a drought tolerant species (Corchorus olitorius L., GF) and a drought sensitive species (Corchorus capsularis L., YY). In total, 45,831 non-redundant unigenes with average sequence length of 1421 bp were identified. Higher numbers of differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were discovered in YY (794) than in GF (39), implying that YY was relatively more vulnerable or hyper-responsive to drought stress at the molecular level; the two main pathways, phenylpropanoid biosynthesis and peroxisome pathway, significantly involved in scavenging of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and 14 unigenes in the two pathways presented a significant differential expression in response to increase of superoxide. Our classification analysis showed that 1769 transcription factors can be grouped into 81 families and 948 protein kinases (PKs) into 122 families. In YY, we identified 34 TF DEGs from and 23 PK DEGs, including 19 receptor-like kinases (RLKs). Most of these RLKs were downregulated during drought stress, implying their role as negative regulators of the drought tolerance mechanism in jute.

Transcriptome Analysis of Two Species of Jute in Response to Polyethylene Glycol (PEG)- induced Drought Stress

Black gram is one of the most indispensable components of the world food basket and the growth and health of the crop get influenced by biotic and abiotic factors. Beneficial phyto-microbes are one among them that influence the crop growth, more particularly the seed borne microbes are comparatively beneficial, that they pass from generation to generation and are associated with the plants from establishment to development. In the present study, twenty seed-borne yeasts were characterized and tested for growth promotion of black gram and their antagonism against black gram phytopathogens. Two yeasts, Pichia kudriavzevii POY5 and Issatchenkia terricola GRY4, produced indole acetic acid (IAA), siderophore, 1-amino cyclopropane-1-carboxylic acid deaminase (ACCD), and plant defense enzymes. They solubilized phosphate and zinc and fixed atmospheric nitrogen. Inoculation of these two yeast isolates and Rhizobium BMBS1 improved the seed germination, physiological parameters and yield of black gram. Inoculation of Rhizoctonia solani-challenged plants with plant growth-promoting yeasts, resulted in the synthesis of defense-related enzymes such as peroxidases (POD), chitinases, catalase (CAT), and polyphenol oxidases (PPO). Thus, the seed-borne yeasts, Pichia kudriavzevii POY5 and Issatchenkia terricola GRY4, could be used as plant probiotics for black gram.

Performance and Stability Analysis of Spices and Spice Products Export from India

To accomplish the nutrient requirement for crops, chemical fertilizer is mostly used. Due to the hazardous effect on fruit quality, on soil, water and environmental conditions there is a need to adopt an integrated approach to supply all the essential nutrients to the plants without harming the soil and environment. By using the both of inorganic and organic fertilizers to enhance the production of crops is known as Integrated Nutrient Management. In basic words, the INM method means the use of artificial fertilisers in addition with crop residues, organic manures, bio-fertilizers and other sources related to biological in equal amount of proportion (Mahajan et al., 2009). Effect of Integrated Nutrient Management on Vegetative Growth, Fruit Yield and Quality of Fruit Crops

Non-rhizobial endophytes (NRE) from root nodule niche are well known for their plant growth-promoting (PGP) traits, unique metabolites, and assisting rhizobial nodulation. A co- inoculant developed with NRE yeast strain Candida tropicalis VYW1 and Rhizobium sp. VRE1 obtained from mungbean nodules significantly influenced nodulation behavior, plant growth, and soil health by exhibiting increased nodules plant−1, nodule biomass (141.71 mg), and N uptake (1.13 kg ha−1). Besides, root and shoot length, total biomass also increased significantly in co-inoculated plants registering 23.9 cm, 22.5 cm, and 0.51 g, respectively. Similarly, soil nutrient status, including soil pH, EC, organic carbon, available N, P, K, and Zn, also enhanced due to co-inoculation. The stimulatory effects by co-inoculation are presumably affirmed due to unique metabolites such as indole, tryptophan, leucine, benzaldehyde, octadecanoic acid, α-D-galactopyranoside, and L- Proline as evidenced through metabolite profiling using GC-MS. Our results concur that the positive interaction of non-rhizobial endophytic yeast with rhizobial strain may emerge as a novel bio-inoculant for sustainable pulse productivity.

Genetic divergence within some genotypes of tossa jute (Corchorus olitorius L.).

The present investigation studied genetic divergence of 60 genotypes of tossa jute (Corchorus olitorius L.) which included sixteen standard varieties to identify the most diverged genotypes under moisture stress condition. On the basis of mahalanobis D2 analysis, genotypes were grouped into five clusters. Maximum inter-cluster distance was observed between cluster IV and V while cluster III showed the maximum intra-cluster distance. Cluster V exhibited highest means for days to 50% flowering, plant height, number of node, internode length, base diameter, mid diameter, top diameter, bark thickness and fibre weight. The highest contribution (12.63%) was exerted by plant height of total divergence. The results of the present study suggested that hybridization between genotypes in cluster V and IV could provide a wide spectrum of variation in the segregating generation which could provide opportunity for isolation of drought tolerant with high fibre yielding lines.

Genetic Divergence of Tossa Jute (Corchorus olitorius L.) for Fibre Yield and its Related Component Characters Under Moisture Stress Condition

An investigation was carried out to study the effect of foliar spray of micronutrients, viz, calcium and boron and sorbitol on fruit-set, yield and fruit quality in mango (Mangifera indica L). cv. Himsagar, at Bidhan Chandra Krishi Viswavidyalaya, Regional Research Station, Gayeshpur. The experiment was laid out in Randomized Block Design (RBD), with three replications. Results revealed that boric acid (0.02%) + sorbitol (2.0%) were the most effective for enhancing fruit-set (1.58%), yield (48.51 kg tree-1), fruit weight (165.6 g), TSS (18.59°Brix), total sugars (14.92%) and ascorbic acid content (20.32 mg 100 g-1), while, calcium nitrate (Ca-0.06%) + boric acid (B-0.02%) proved to be the most effective for increasing shelf life in mango cv. Himsagar, at ambient room temperature.
