Polarized memory switching effects in Ag2Se/Se/M thin film sandwiches

This paper discusses cyclic deformation and fatigue behaviors of stainless steel 304L and aluminum 7075-T6. Effects of loading sequence, mean strain or stress, and prestraining were investigated. The behavior of aluminum is shown not to be affected by preloading, whereas the behavior of stainless steel is greatly influenced by prior loading. Mean stress relaxation in strain control and ratcheting in load control and their influence on fatigue life are discussed. Some unusual mean strain test results are presented for SS304L, where in spite of mean stress relaxation fatigue lives were significantly longer than fully-reversed tests. Prestraining indicated no effect on either deformation or fatigue behavior of aluminum, while it induced considerable hardening in SS304L and led to different results on fatigue life, depending on the test control mode. Possible mechanisms for secondary hardening observed in some tests, characterized by a continuous increase in the stress response and leading to runout fatigue life, are also discussed. The Smith-Watson-Topper parameter was shown to correlate most of the experimental data for both materials under different loading condition.

Structural transformation in thin films of binary alloys of 1st and 6th group elements, prepared by vacuum evaporation, has been studied by the author in detail by electron diffraction. The alloys chosen for the investigation were Ag2Te, Ag2Se, Ag2S, Cu2Te and Cu2Se. The study of thin films of these alloys revealed that there occurs a transformation in structure and on heating, the temperatures of transformation are higher compared to the alloys in the bulk state. It has also been observed that the temperatures of structural transformation during heating and cooling are different. No quantitative explanation of the result has been given and it is expected that detailed discussion of the results will be published later.

at. ~ Zn in the Cu-Zn system [3 ]. The similarity of these two slopes suggests that the tendency toward martensite formation in the two systems is not as disparate as had been previously thought [1 ]. The two alloy systems only appeared to behave differently because the earlier investigators [1, 2] either did not study alloys low enough in Zn content (i.e. Pops and Massalski [1 ]), or they did not use low enough temperatures (i.e. Brown and Stewart [2]). The present experiments demonstrate, however, that even if Brown and Stewart had produced martensite at low temperatures, they would not have observed it at room temperature because it would have reverted to/3' phase during heating.
