Control of regenerative braking systems for four-wheel-independently-actuated electric vehicles

This study focuses on the benefits of utilizing the axle electric motors of hybrid electric vehicles for vehicle stability control. In that context, a differential braking and driving vehicle stability control strategy that is developed for a hybrid electric sport utility vehicle equipped with axle motors is presented. The developed strategy that is based on integrated electrohydraulic braking and axle motor torque control is compared with the production vehicle stability control schemes, by real-time simulations of extreme steering maneuvers, using controller and vehicle models built in the MATLAB/Simulink environment. The comparison is made in terms of the stability and performance, and also from an energy consumption standpoint which is an important feature of hybrid electric vehicles.

Development of a vehicle stability control strategy for a hybrid electric vehicle equipped with axle motors

This work proposes an optimal control allocation method for the brake system and the wheel motors of an electric vehicle. The realisation of the method is proposed for vehicle dynamics control and energy recuperation. The control allocation takes into account temperature of electric motors, SOC and voltage of battery, vehicle velocity, fault situations, wheel slip, and vehicle subsystem prioritisation depending on parameters of vehicle dynamics. To illustrate the functional properties of the control allocation method, the corresponding simulation study is performed for the straight-line braking and ‘sine with dwell’ cornering. The simulations use a number of mathematical models including the 14 DoF model of vehicle motion and the models of electric vehicle systems. The simulation results confirmed effectiveness of the proposed approach both for regenerative braking and vehicle stability.

We consider the problem of rear axle regenerative braking maximization in hybrid vehicles. We focus on cornering maneuvers on low friction surfaces, where excessive braking at the rear axle might induce vehicle instability.
