The first part of this two-part review focused on the fundamental and diagnostics aspects of laser-induced plasmas, only touching briefly upon concepts such as sensitivity and detection limits and largely omitting any discussion of the vast panorama of the practical applications of the technique. Clearly a true LIBS community has emerged, which promises to quicken the pace of LIBS developments, applications, and implementations. With this second part, a more applied flavor is taken, and its intended goal is summarizing the current state-of-the-art of analytical LIBS, providing a contemporary snapshot of LIBS applications, and highlighting new directions in laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy, such as novel approaches, instrumental developments, and advanced use of chemometric tools. More specifically, we discuss instrumental and analytical approaches (e.g., double- and multi-pulse LIBS to improve the sensitivity), calibration-free approaches, hyphenated approaches in which techniques such as Raman and fluorescence are coupled with LIBS to increase sensitivity and information power, resonantly enhanced LIBS approaches, signal processing and optimization (e.g., signal-to-noise analysis), and finally applications. An attempt is made to provide an updated view of the role played by LIBS in the various fields, with emphasis on applications considered to be unique. We finally try to assess where LIBS is going as an analytical field, where in our opinion it should go, and what should still be done for consolidating the technique as a mature method of chemical analysis.

Laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS), part II: review of instrumental and methodological approaches to material analysis and applications to different fields.

Many-particle charged-particle plasma simulations using spatial meshes for the electromagnetic field solutions, particle-in-cell (PIC) merged with Monte Carlo collision (MCC) calculations, are coming into wide use for application to partially ionized gases. The author emphasizes the development of PIC computer experiments since the 1950s starting with one-dimensional (1-D) charged-sheet models, the addition of the mesh, and fast direct Poisson equation solvers for 2-D and 3-D. Details are provided for adding the collisions between the charged particles and neutral atoms. The result is many-particle simulations with many of the features met in low-temperature collision plasmas; for example, with applications to plasma-assisted materials processing, but also related to warmer plasmas at the edges of magnetized fusion plasmas. >

Hall thrusters are very efficient and competitive electric propulsion devices for satellites and are currently in use in a number of telecommunications and government spacecraft. Their power spans from 100 W to 20 kW, with thrust between a few mN and 1 N and specific impulse values between 1000 and 3000 s. The basic idea of Hall thrusters consists in generating a large local electric field in a plasma by using a transverse magnetic field to reduce the electron conductivity. This electric field can extract positive ions from the plasma and accelerate them to high velocity without extracting grids, providing the thrust. These principles are simple in appearance but the physics of Hall thrusters is very intricate and non-linear because of the complex electron transport across the magnetic field and its coupling with the electric field and the neutral atom density. Tutorial: Physics and modeling of Hall thrusters

Collision integrals (transport cross sections ) of air species in the temperature range 50 ‐100,000 K have been calculated by using experimental and theoretical informations on potential energy curves and cross sections. The results for the different interactions (neutral‐neutral, neutral ‐parent ion, electron ‐neutral) have been compared with old and recent calculations obtaining, in general, a satisfactory agreement. Finally analytical forms for e tting and interpolating the present numerical results are reported.

Several applications of PIC simulations for understanding basic physics phenomena in low-temperature plasmas are presented: capacitive radiofrequency discharges in Oxygen, dusty plasmas and negative ion sources for heating of fusion plasmas. The analysis of these systems based on their microscopic properties as accessible with PIC gives improved insight into their complex behavior. These studies are results of joint efforts over about one decade of research groups from Greifswald University, Germany; Bari University, Italy; Keio University, Japan and Innsbruck University, Austria. Particle in Cell Simulation of Low Temperature Laboratory Plasmas

The interaction energy in systems (atom–atom, atom–ion and atom–molecule) involving open-shell species, predicted by a phenomenological method, is used for collision integral calculations. The results are compared with those obtained by different authors by using the complete set of quantum mechanical interaction potentials arizing from the electronic configurations of separate partners. A satisfactory agreement is achieved, implying that the effect of deep potential wells, present in some of the chemical potentials, is cancelled by the effect of strong repulsive potentials.

On the possibility of using model potentials for collision integral calculations of interest for planetary atmospheres

State-to-state approaches are used to shed light on (a) thermodynamic and transport properties of LTE plasmas, (b) atomic and molecular plasmas for aerospace applications and (c) RF sustained parallel plate reactors. The efforts made by the group of Bari in the kinetics and dynamics of electrons and molecular species are discussed from the point of view of either the master equation approach or the molecular dynamics of elementary processes. Recent experimental results are finally rationalized with a state-to-state kinetics based on the coupling of vibrational kinetics with the Boltzmann equation for the electron energy distribution function.
