Journal ArticleDOI

Promoting the columnar to equiaxed transition and grain refinement of titanium alloys during additive manufacturing

TL;DR: In this article, the role of alloy constitution is explored in three classical alloy design regimes: an alloy containing no grain refiners (Ti 6Al 4V); an alloy only containing grain refining solutes (Ti 3Al 8V 6Cr 4Mo 4Zr); and an alloy including both grain refining and nucleant particles (Ti3Al 8v 6Cr4Mo 4zr+La2O3).
Journal ArticleDOI

A new approach to nuclei identification and grain refinement in titanium alloys

TL;DR: In this paper, the potential for quasi-stable elemental particles (Mo, Nb, W) to act as potent heterogeneous nucleant substrates for the Ti β-phase during arc melting and wire arc additive manufacturing was investigated.
Journal ArticleDOI

Investigating the morphological effects of solute on the β-phase in as-cast titanium alloys

TL;DR: In this article, the efficacy of chromium additions to reduce anisotropic growth morphologies of the primary β-phase in titanium castings was investigated by characterising the size, morphology and positions of β-grains in the cross-sections of each alloy.
Journal ArticleDOI

Titanium sponge as a source of native nuclei in titanium alloys

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors investigated the source of the β-grain morphologies observed in a wide array of Ti alloys produced by numerous solidification-based processes and, in terms of conventional solidification theory, are believed to be a consequence of heterogeneous nucleation upon native nucleant particles during solidification.
