Voyager 1 and 2 observations of the Saturnian ring system have led to the discovery of several interesting phenomena associated with its fine dust component. The dust grains are immersed in a plasma. The present paper is concerned with the electrostatics of a dusty plasma, giving particular attention to the capacitance and charge of an individual grain in the presence of neighboring grains and the surrounding plasma. The Poisson equation and gauge considerations are discussed along with a solution of the Poisson equation for several models, taking into account impermeable grains, permeable grains, and a spherical capacitor model. A comparison of potential shapes for three models is conducted, and the effect of neighbors on charging currents is explored.

The electrostatics of a dusty plasma

We extend the Lee (1982) self-consistent theory of upstream wave excitation and particle energization to address observations by Voyager 2 of sunward propagating MHD waves and diffuse suprathermal particle populations upstream of the Jovian bow shock. Two new ideas are incorporated into the theory. First, the interplanetary seed wave population is taken to be an equal admixture of waves propagating both toward and away from the shock parallel to the interplanetary magnetic field. Second, finite connection times are incorporated approximately into the theory in an effort to understand whether the particle spectra at high energy are limited by particle escape or finite connection time. It is found that finite connection times dominate the particle distribution at energies above 40 keV. In this manner the suprathermal proton distributions can be accounted for by a multiple reflection, shock acceleration theory. We find that the theory can also account for the low-frequency waves observed upstream of the shock in conjunction with the suprathermal ions.

Coupled hydromagnetic wave excitation and ion acceleration upstream of the earth's bow shock

Voyager 1 and 2 magnetic field observations confirm and extend the earlier Pioneer 10 detection of the Jovian magnetodisc, a region of enhanced charged particles and plasma and reduced magnetic field intensity located near the magnetic equatorial plane. Modeling of the azimuthal current sheet by a finite thickness annulus of inner radius 5 Jovian radii, 5-Jovian radii thickness, and extending to about 50 Jovian radii provides detailed fits of the vector magnetic field perturbations observed in relation to the planetary field for distances less than 30 Jovian radii. Field line geometry is also investigated, and better insight into the phenomena of charged particle absorption by the Galilean satellites is obtained which provides improved explanations of observed effects due to Ganymede.

Modeling the Jovian current sheet and inner magnetosphere

In situ data from the Pioneer and Voyager spacecraft, supplemented by earth-based observations and theoretical considerations, are used as the basis for the present quantitative, compact model of the 1 eV-several MeV charged particle distribution in the Jovian magnetosphere. The thermal plasma parameters of convection speed, number density, and characteristic energy, are specified as functions of position for electrons and for the ion species H(+), O(+), O(2+), S(+), S(2+), S(3+), and Na(+). Major features of the magnetic field, thermal plasma, and trapped particle distributions, are modeled and results for each plasma region are compared with observed spectra. Comparisons show that the model represents the data to within a factor of 2 + or - 1, except where time variations are significant. Practical applications of the model to spacecraft near Jupiter are given.

Charged particle distributions in Jupiter's magnetosphere

We analyze the radial distribution of electron populations inside 20 R-s in Saturn's magnetosphere, and we calculate moments for these populations by a forward modeling method using composite spectra produced by the CAPS/ELS (0.6 eV to 26 keV) and the MIMI/LEMMS (15 keV to 10 MeV) instruments on board Cassini. We first calculate and harmonize both data sets in physical units and apply corrections taking into account biases introduced by spacecraft interaction with the magnetospheric environment. We then test different bimodal isotropic electron distribution models, deciding on a model with two kappa distributions. We adjust our isotropic model to the flux composite spectra with a least square method to produce three sets of fluid parameters (density, temperature, spectral index) per electron population. The radial profiles are then analyzed, revealing a relevant boundary at 9 R-s in both thermal and suprathermal electron populations. Observed discontinuities in the moment profiles (sudden drop-off in cold density profile outside 9 R-s, hot electrons drop-off inside 9 R-s) coincide with the known outer edge of Saturn's neutral OH cloud. Farther out, thermal electrons disappear completely beyond 15 R-s while suprathermal electrons are still observed in the middle and outer magnetosphere.

Multi-instrument analysis of electron populations in Saturn's magnetosphere

Extensive measurements of low-energy positive ions and electrons in the vicinity of Uranus have revealed a fully developed magnetosphere. The magnetospheric plasma has a warm component with a temperature of 4 to 50 electron volts and a peak density of roughly 2 protons per cubic centimeter, and a hot component, with a temperature of a few kiloelectron volts and a peak density of roughly 0.1 proton per cubic centimeter. The warm component is observed both inside and outside of L = 5, whereas the hot component is excluded from the region inside of that L shell. Possible sources of the plasma in the magnetosphere are the extended hydrogen corona, the solar wind, and the ionosphere. The Uranian moons do not appear to be a significant plasma source. The boundary of the hot plasma component at L = 5 may be associated either with Miranda or with the inner limit of a deeply penetrating, solar wind-driven magnetospheric convection system. The Voyager 2 spacecraft repeatedly encountered the plasma sheet in the magnetotail at locations that are consistent with a geometric model for the plasma sheet similar to that at Earth.

A Simple Method for Obtaining a 3-DIMENSIONAL Proton Distribution Function from Voyager Plasma Data

The main sensor of the Vogager plasma experiment consists of a cluster of three, modulated-grid Faraday cups whose normals are arranged symmetrically about the symmetry axis of the cluster at an angle of 20 degrees to that axis. In interplanetary space, each cup explores the positive ion distribution by accepting particles from contiguous slices in velocity space. The slices are narrow in the direction of the normal to the modulating grid but are broad in planes parallel to that grid. The resulting three sets of measurements can be combined to yield the three-dimensional distribution function in the following way: the distribution function is assumed to be gyrotropic. For each value of speed in a frame of reference moving with the bulk velocity of the solar wind, the variation of the distribution function with angle from the field direction is represented by a series of Legendre polynomials. Effects such as double-streaming and heat flow can be well represented by using only the first three terms of the series which are fully specified by the measurements. Examples of the use of this method in the analysis of Voyager data are shown.
