Uses of the reject brine from inland desalination for fish farming, Spirulina cultivation, and irrigation of forage shrub and crops

The abundance of phytoplankton and the composition of nutrients were analysed at three stations in the highly stratified karstic Krka Estuary (east Adriatic coast), in the period March 2000–February 2001. The phytoplankton assemblages were analysed by cluster analysis (average linkage), applied to the Bray–Curtis dissimilarity index computed on density data. Seven groups were identified, which can be combined into two major groups. The spring period was influenced by high riverine water inflow and characterised by the development of cocolithophorids and autotrophic nanoplankton, and small diatoms in winter. In the summer–autumn period domination of one large group occurred, comprising dinoflagellates (micro and nano) and colonial diatoms. Three small groups were also present in that period, each with a specific phytoplankton composition. Variance explained by the Canonical Correspondence Analysis (CCA) of the time-position data was low but corresponded with clustering of samples. CC analysis revealed temperature and salinity as the most important indicators of riverine water impact that influenced species composition and phytoplankton seasonality. The nutrient regime was highly influenced by river/seawater exchange, except in the case of orthophosphates, which showed no correlation with salinity.

Phytoplankton seasonality in the highly stratified karstic Estuary (Krka, Adriatic Sea)

We report simultaneous measurements of fuel consumption, driving patterns, and CO2, CO, and NOx emission factors for diesel passenger buses under real operating conditions in high altitude cities (>2000 masl) and in mountainous regions with an average road grade of 4%. These measurements were obtained using a Portable Emission Measurement System (PEMS) monitoring a sample of 15 buses during eight months of daily operation. For a city with a high level of vehicular traffic (Mexico City), we obtained an average fuel consumption of 0.41 L/km and emission factors of 965.8, 41.4, and 5.3 g/km for CO2, CO, and NOx, respectively. Fuel consumption and CO2 emissions were within expected values. However, CO emissions were approximately three times higher while the NOx emission were half of the reported values in the literature for buses of similar technology working at low altitude.

Real emissions, driving patterns and fuel consumption of in-use diesel buses operating at high altitude

Monsoon plays a critical role in triggering environmental features such as seawater temperature, salinity,
disolved oxygen content and nutrient generation which In turn become responsible for production of phytoplankton
and zooplankton. Along the southwest coast of India the intensity of southwest monsoon as evidenced by annual
rainfall showed a declining trend during the years 1983 to 1988. An attmpt is made here to correlate certain environmental
features with the abundance and fluctuations in phytoplankton and zooplankton in the inshore waters off
Cochin, Vizhinjam and Minicoy.

Effects of graded dietary lipid levels on growth, feed utilization, body composition and metabolism in juvenile white leg shrimp, Penaeus vannamei (Boone, 1931) reared in inland saline water of 10 g/L salinity

An attempt was made to assess the suitability of the inland saline water of Rohtak (Haryana) for mass cultivation of Spirulina platensis , a salt loving cyanobacterium. Cultivation of S. platensis was performed in indoor and outdoor culture units. The investigation revealed that the yield of biomass in de-calcified inland saline water was comparable to the yield obtained in synthetic chemical-based prescribed growth medium. Further, the quality of biomass in terms of protein, chlorophyll a , carotenoids and phycocyanin contents was also comparable to the prescribed medium. The downstream processing of the biomass through a three-step process resulted in an appreciable quantity of a highly valuable pigment, phycocyanin (purity ratio: A 620/ A 280 = 3.13–3.39). The overall observations of the study suggest that inland saline water can be used for cost-effective production of Spirulina biomass and value-added chemicals. The removal of calcium and salts from inland saline water by S. platensis cultivation also offers an added advantage for the reuse of the spent medium for agricultural and aquacultural purposes.

Utilization of inland saline water for Spirulina cultivation

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to estimate total emission during idling of vehicles and validate emission results from real-world data. Design/methodology/approach – Motor Vehicle Emission Simulator (MOVES)2010b emission model is customised for developing country like India and a case study of the Ashram intersection in Delhi has been selected in order to measure the emissions of vehicles during idling. Findings – Results show that 3.997 mg/m3 of hydrocarbon, 1.82 mg/m3 of NOx and 17.688 mg/m3 of carbon monoxide is emitted from the cars, trucks and buses, respectively, at Ashram intersection in one day. As there are 600 intersections throughout Delhi, a total of 2,398.055 mg/m3 of hydrocarbon, 1,087.068 mg/m3 of NOx and 10,612.612 mg/m3 of carbon monoxide is emitted from cars, trucks and buses in a day in all of Delhi. Originality/value – Knowledge of idling emission and fuel loss is very little for Indian traffic condition during delays.

MOVES model for idling emission of signalised junction in developing country

The Potential Fishing Zones (PFZs) advisory from INCOIS, Hyderabad for Mumbai coast was analysed to study the trend of PFZ locations. The PFZ trends for landing centers of Versova, Mahim and Colaba were studied during the period 2010-2011. The average depth and distance were 55.2 m and 100 km respectively from the coast in 2010. In the year 2011, the average depth and distance were calculated at 37.8 m and 59 km respectively. The PFZ areas located ranged from 5-229 km in distance and 12-97 m in depth during 2010 and 22-1000 km in distance and 17-500 m in depth in 2011.

Trends of potential fishing zones (PFZs) along the Mumbai coast, Maharashtra

Industrial establishments along the head region of Patalganga River, at Raigad district, Maharashtra is developing since few decades. These manmade and natural stressors are destructing the ecological quality of Patalganga-Amba estuarine complex slowly. A study had conducted from October 2016 to December 2017 to know the phytoplankton abundance, distribution and its seasonal variations at Patalganga estuary. A total of 47 genera of phytoplankton were identified, out of that, 33 genera are diatoms (17 pennate and 16 centric diatom), 7 genera of din flagellate and 7 genera of other algae were observed from the study site. H’ and J’ observed were 2.503 to 2.506 and 0.94 to 0.97 respectively, indicates the study site was productive.
