Carbonatite Metasomatism of the Oceanic Upper Mantle: Evidence from Clinopyroxenes and Glasses in Ultramafic Xenoliths of Grande Comore, Indian Ocean

An in-depth Sr-Nd-Pb-He-Os isotope and trace element study of the EMII-defining Samoan hot spot lavas leads to a new working hypothesis for the origin of this high 87Sr/86Sr mantle end-member. Systematics of the Samoan fingerprint include (1) increasing 206Pb/204Pb with time - from 18.6 at the older, western volcanoes to 19.4 at the present-day hot spot center, Vailulu'u Seamount, (2) en-echelon arrays in 206Pb/204Pb – 208Pb/204Pb space which correspond to the two topographic lineaments of the 375 km long volcanic chain – this is much like the Kea and Loa Trends in Hawai'i, (3) the highest 87Sr/86Sr (0.7089) of all oceanic basalts, (4) an asymptotic decrease in 3He/4He from 24 RA [Farley et al., 1992] to the MORB value of 8 RA with increasing 87Sr/86Sr, and (5) mixing among four components which are best described as the “enriched mantle”, the depleted FOZO mantle, the (even more depleted) MORB Mantle, and a mild HIMU (high 238U/204Pb) mantle component. A theoretical, “pure” EMII lava composition has been calculated and indicates an extremely smooth trace element pattern of this end-member mantle reservoir. The standard recycling model (of ocean crust/sediment) fails as an explanation for producing Samoan EM2, due to these smooth spidergrams for EM2 lavas, low 187Os/188Os ratios and high 3He/4He (>8 RA). Instead, the origin of EM2 has been modeled with the ancient formation of metasomatised oceanic lithosphere, followed by storage in the deep mantle and return to the surface in the Samoan plume.

Recycled metasomatized lithosphere as the origin of the Enriched Mantle II (EM2) end‐member: Evidence from the Samoan Volcanic Chain

New mineralogical and geochemical data from a suite of glass +/- apatite +/- amphibole +/- phlogopite +/- carbonate-bearing spinel wehrlite, lherzolite and harzburgite xenoliths from the Newer Volcanics, southeastern Australia, are consistent with metasomatic interactions between harzburgitic or refractory lherzolitic lithosphere, and penetrative sodic dolomitic carbonatite melts. Metasomatism occurred when ascending dolomitic carbonatites crossed the reaction enstatite + dolomite = forsterite + diopside + CO2 at similar to 1.5-2.0 GPa, resulting in partial to complete replacement of primary orthopyroxene by sodic clinopyroxene, together with crystallization of apatite, amphibole and phlogopite, and release of CO2-rich fluid. In the sample suite examined, the minimum amount of carbonatite melt may be estimated on the assumption that metasomatism occurred in a closed system, and that the precursor lithology was clinopyroxene-poor harzburgite. The derivative wehrlite compositions require 6-12% carbonatite addition, the lherzolites require similar to 8% or less, and the harzburgites require minimal addition of carbonatite. However, metasomatism probably also involved an open system component, during which by partitioning relationships with the reacting carbonatite, resulting in loss from the metasomatized volume of a fugitive, siliceous, aluminous, alkali- and LILE-enriched silicate melt.

Carbonatite metasomatism in the southeastern Australian lithosphere

Mechanism and timing of lithospheric modification and replacement beneath the eastern North China Craton: Peridotitic xenoliths from the 100 Ma Fuxin basalts and a regional synthesis

Numerous dykes of ultramafic lamprophyre (aillikite, mela-aillikite, damtjernite) and subordinate dolomite-bearing carbonatite with U–Pb perovskite emplacement ages of 590–555Ma occur in the vicinity of Aillik Bay, coastal Labrador. The ultramafic lamprophyres principally consist of olivine and phlogopite phenocrysts in a carbonateor clinopyroxene-dominated groundmass. Ti-rich primary garnet (kimzeyite and Ti-andradite) typically occurs at the aillikite type locality and is considered diagnostic for ultramafic lamprophyre–carbonatite suites. Titanian aluminous phlogopite and clinopyroxene, as well as comparatively Al-enriched but Cr–Mg-poor spinel (Cr-number < 0.85), are compositionally distinct from analogous minerals in kimberlites, orangeites and olivine lamproites, indicating different magma geneses. The Aillik Bay ultramafic lamprophyres and carbonatites have variable but overlapping Sr/Sri ratios (0 70369–0 70662) and show a narrow range in initial «Nd (þ0 1 to þ1 9) implying that they are related to a common type of parental magma with variable isotopic characteristics. Aillikite is closest to this primary magma composition in terms of MgO ( 15–20wt %) and Ni ( 200–574 ppm) content; the abundant groundmass carbonate has dCPDB between 5 7 and 5‰, similar to primary mantle-derived carbonates, and dOSMOW from 9 4 to 11 6‰. Extensive melting of a garnet peridotite source region containing carbonateand phlogopite-rich veins at 4–7 GPa triggered by enhanced lithospheric extension can account for the volatile-bearing, potassic, incompatible element enriched and MgO-rich nature of the proto-aillikite magma. It is argued that low-degree potassic silicate to carbonatitic melts from upwelling asthenosphere infiltrated the cold base of the stretched lithosphere and solidified as veins, thereby crystallizing calcite and phlogopite that were not in equilibrium with peridotite. Continued Late Neoproterozoic lithospheric thinning, with progressive upwelling of the asthenosphere beneath a developing rift branch in this part of the North Atlantic craton, caused further veining and successive remelting of veins plus volatile-fluxed melting of the host fertile garnet peridotite, giving rise to long-lasting hybrid ultramafic lamprophyre magma production in conjunction with the break-up of the Rodinia supercontinent. Proto-aillikite magma reached the surface only after coating the uppermost mantle conduits with glimmeritic material, which caused minor alkali loss.
