In recent years, near-nano (submicron) and nanostructured materials have attracted increasingly more attention from the materials community. Nanocrystalline materials are characterized by a microstructural length or grain size of up to about 100 nm. Materials having grain size of ∼0.1 to 0.3 μm are classified as submicron materials. Nanocrystalline materials exhibit various shapes or forms, and possess unique chemical, physical or mechanical properties. When the grain size is below a critical value (∼10–20 nm), more than 50 vol.% of atoms is associated with grain boundaries or interfacial boundaries. In this respect, dislocation pile-ups cannot form, and the Hall–Petch relationship for conventional coarse-grained materials is no longer valid. Therefore, grain boundaries play a major role in the deformation of nanocrystalline materials. Nanocrystalline materials exhibit creep and super plasticity at lower temperatures than conventional micro-grained counterparts. Similarly, plastic deformation of nanocrystalline coatings is considered to be associated with grain boundary sliding assisted by grain boundary diffusion or rotation. In this review paper, current developments in fabrication, microstructure, physical and mechanical properties of nanocrystalline materials and coatings will be addressed. Particular attention is paid to the properties of transition metal nitride nanocrystalline films formed by ion beam assisted deposition process.

Nanocrystalline materials and coatings

In recent years, several new solid lubricant and modern lubrication concepts have been developed to achieve better lubricity and longer wear life in demanding tribological applications. Most of the traditional solid lubricants were prepared in the form of metal, ceramic and polymer-matrix composites. They have been used successfully in various engineering applications. Recent progress in thin-film deposition technologies has led to the synthesis of new generations of adaptative, self-lubricating coatings with composite or multilayered architectures, by using duplex/multiplex surface treatments. These modern self-lubricating coatings progressively make their way into the commercial marketplace and meet the ever-increasing performance demands of more severe applications. The present paper reviews our recent understanding of the lubrication mechanisms of both traditional and new solid lubricants, with particular emphasis on solid lubricant methods and practices.

Supertough wear-resistant coatings with ‘chameleon’ surface adaptation

In this paper, a review of the present status of the research and technological development in the field of superhard nanocomposite coatings is attempted. Various deposition techniques have been used to prepare nanocomposite coatings. Among them, reactive magnetron sputtering is most commonly used. Nanocomposite coating design methodology and synthesis are described with emphasis on the magnetron sputtering deposition technique. Also discussed are the hardness and fracture toughness measurements of the coatings and the size effect. Superhard nanocomposite thin films are obtainable through optimal design of microstructure. So far, much attention is paid to increasing hardness, but not enough to toughness. The development of next generation superhard coatings should base on appropriate material design to achieve high hardness and at the same time high toughness.

Phase stability and mechanical properties of novel high entropy transition metal carbides

Low temperature vacuum deposition of tungsten carbide coatings, W1−yCy with compositions that varied from y=0 to 0.9, was investigated. Special attention was given to the production of nanocrystalline carbides with coatings of y>0.5. Previous attempts at producing WC with excess carbon at near room temperatures resulted in the formation of amorphous phases. In this study, crystalline WC was produced at 45 and 300 °C by the intersection of plasma fluxes from magnetron sputtering of tungsten and laser ablation of graphite. At both temperatures, formation of WC chemical bonding and nanocrystalline cubic β-WC1−x was observed using x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and grazing angle x-ray diffraction when the carbon content was increased more than 30%. Increasing the substrate temperature to 300 °C did not affect the percentage of WC bonding, but it did promote considerable crystallization of cubic WC. As the carbon content was increased to more than 50%, a second phase consisting of amorphous carbon (a-C) was observed together with amorphitization of β-WC1−x. The a-C phase was identified as amorphous diamond-like carbon (DLC) by Raman spectroscopy. At 60–80 at. % C, a two phase structure was produced, which was composed of nanocrystalline β-WC1−x with 5–10 nm grains and amorphous DLC. The hardness of the WC/DLC composites was about 26 GPa based on nanoindentation tests. Correlation of the chemistry, microstructure, and mechanical properties of WC and WC/a-C coatings is discussed.
