This paper reviews the history of multipactor discharge theory, focusing on recent models of multipactor accessibility and saturation. Two cases are treated in detail: That of a first-order, two-surface multipactor, and that of a single-surface multipactor on a dielectric. In both cases, susceptibility curves are constructed to indicate the regions of external parameter space where multipactor is likely to occur, taking into account the dependence on surface materials, and the effects of space charge and cavity loading. In the case of a dielectric, multipactor is found to deliver about 1% of the rf power to the surface. The two cases are contrasted in light of experimental observations.

Multipactor discharge on metals and dielectrics: Historical review and recent theories

SuperKEKB, a 7 GeV electron - 4 GeV positron double-ring collider, is constructed by upgrading KEKB in order to seek new physics beyond the Standard Model. The design luminosity of SuperKEKB is 8 x 10^35 /cm^2 /s - 40 times higher than that achieved by KEKB. The greater part of the gain comes from significantly decreasing the beam sizes at the interaction point based on the nanobeam collision scheme; the design beam currents in both rings are double those achieved in KEKB. Large-scale construction to upgrade both the collider rings and the injector was conducted, and beam commissioning without the Belle II detector and final-focus magnets was successfully carried out from February to June in 2016. Subsequently, renovation of the interaction region, including the installation of the final-focus magnets and Belle II, and construction in the final stage of a new positron damping ring were conducted. Having completed the interaction region, beam collision tuning is scheduled from March till July in 2018. This paper reviews the design, construction, and beam commissioning of SuperKEKB.

SuperKEKB Collider

Dielectric window breakdown is a serious challenge in high-power microwave (HPM) transmission and radiation. Breakdown at the vacuum/dielectric interface is triggered by multipactor and finally realized by plasma avalanche in the ambient desorbed or evaporated gas layer above the dielectric. Methods of improving breakdown thresholds are key challenges in HPM systems. First, the main theoretical and experimental progress is reviewed. Next, the mechanisms of multipactor suppression for periodic rectangular and triangular surface profiles by dynamic analysis and particle-in-cell simulations are surveyed. Improved HPM breakdown thresholds are demonstrated by proof-of-principle and multigigawatt experiments. The current theories and experiments of using dc magnetic field to resonantly accelerate electrons to suppress multipactor are also synthesized. These methods of periodic profiles and magnetic field may solve the key issues of HPM vacuum dielectric breakdown.

Review of recent theories and experiments for improving high-power microwave window breakdown thresholdsa)

The Integrable Optics Test Accelerator (IOTA) is a storage ring for advanced beam physics research currently being built and commissioned at Fermilab. It will operate with protons and electrons using injectors with momenta of 70 and 150 MeV/c, respectively. The research program includes the study of nonlinear focusing integrable optical beam lattices based on special magnets and electron lenses, beam dynamics of space-charge effects and their compensation, optical stochastic cooling, and several other experiments. In this article, we present the design and main parameters of the facility, outline progress to date and provide the timeline of the construction, commissioning and research. The physical principles, design, and hardware implementation plans for the major IOTA experiments are also discussed.

Accelerator technical design report for J-PARC

The behavior of multipactoring electrons in an S-band pillbox RF window used in the KEK electron linac was investigated. The electric field distributions in the pillbox were calculated using the MAFIA code. The trajectory of emitted electrons to the surface of an alumina window disk in the calculated electric field was simulated. The energy deposition distribution of electrons impinging on the alumina disk was also obtained. The results agree well with the discoloring patterns observed for alumina disks after RF operation. This shows that the discoloring can be explained in terms of the bombardment of single-surface multipactoring electrons. Knowledge concerning the electric field distribution and the behavior of multipactoring electrons in the pillbox RF window will be useful in designing RF windows from an electrical point of view. >

Trajectory simulation of multipactoring electrons in an S-band pillbox RF window

The breakdown of RF windows used in high-power klystrons is one of the most serious problems in the development of klystrons. The durability of several dielectric materials used for RF windows is discussed in terms of secondary electron emission (SEE), cathodoluminescence, and dielectric loss. High-power tests of these materials with TiN coatings, thus having low SEE, were also carried out using a traveling wave resonant ring. The results show that alumina ceramics are superior to sapphire and aluminum nitride. The origin of breakdown is investigated, and the requirements for RF window materials are presented. >

Dielectric materials for use as output window in high-power klystrons

An 8-GeV electron/3.5-GeV positron injector for KEKB was completed in 1998 by upgrading the existing 2.5-GeV electron/positron linac. The main goals were to upgrade its accelerating energy from 2.5 to 8 GeV and to increase the positron intensity by about 20 times. This article describes not only the composition and features of the upgraded linac, but also how these goals were achieved, by focusing on an optics design and commissioning issues concerning especially high-intensity single-bunch acceleration to produce positron beams.

The KEKB injector linac

Thin films of TiN having low secondary electron emission (SEE) yields are coated on alumina rf windows in order to suppress the occurrence of multipactor. It is necessary to form films with a proper thickness in order to obtain a sufficient reduction of SEE as well as to avoid any excessive ohmic loss in conductive TiN films. For an optimization of the film thickness on an alumina surface, measurements of the SEE coefficients, and ohmic losses in the rf (S‐band) field were carried out. High‐power examinations of the coated windows were also performed. The results show that TiN films with a thickness of 0.5 nm or greater on alumina ceramics have SEE coefficients of less than unity at an incident energy of 10 keV. High‐power tests have revealed that the ‘‘going away’’ of TiN films is probably due to excessive ohmic losses taking place when the thickness is greater than 1.5 nm. It is concluded that optimized film thickness for window coatings is 0.5–1.5 nm.

TiN film coatings on alumina radio frequency windows

A new SLED cavity has been developed for the 1.54 GeV injector linac of the KEK Accelerator Test Facility (ATF). A significant reduction of electric fields near the irises has been achieved by adopting dual side-wall coupling irises. The new SLED cavities were successfully operated at an output rf-power of 380 MW after the total operation time of 500 h without any serious breakdown problems.
