TL;DR: In this article, an image of an anatomical feature of a patient is compared with a normal, standardized image of the same anatomical feature and a deviation image for the anatomical feature is generated that represents the degree and manner the acquired image deviates from normal for that anatomical feature.
Abstract: Methods and systems for automatically generating a severity index for images of anatomical features of a patient are provided. In an exemplary embodiment, an image of an anatomical feature of a patient is compared with a normal, standardized image of the same anatomical feature. Based on this comparison, a deviation image for the anatomical feature is generated that represents the degree and manner the acquired image deviates from normal for that anatomical feature. The deviation image is automatically pattern matched against multiple images of known disease severity for the anatomical feature. Based on the automated pattern match, a known disease severity, such as in the form of a severity index, is provided as corresponding anatomical feature for the patient.

Abstract: Images and quantitative analytical data are displayed in an interactive manner to a user to facilitate efficient and effective diagnosis, treatment, and assessment of an abnormality or pathology. Images acquired over time, which may be acquired with scanners of various modalities, are registered, displayed in a single image, and comparatively quantified to provide historical analysis of a given abnormality or pathology. The historical images and quantitative data may then be analyzed to determine the effectiveness of an applied treatment and provide additional guidance for a to-be implemented treatment. The images may include anatomical images or functional images. The quantitative data may be displayed in an interactive tabular format or displayed graphically through histograms, charts, graphs, and the like.

TL;DR: Novel analytical shape models for colon-specific anatomy, viz. folds and polyps, built by combining parts with simpler geometric shapes are introduced, better approximate the actual shapes of relevant anatomical structures while allowing the application of model-based analysis on the simpler model parts.
Abstract: This paper presents a model-based technique for lesion detection in colon CT scans that uses analytical shape models to map the local shape curvature at individual voxels to anatomical labels. Local intensity profiles and curvature information have been previously used for discriminating between simple geometric shapes such as spherical and cylindrical structures. This paper introduces novel analytical shape models for colon-specific anatomy, viz. folds and polyps, built by combining parts with simpler geometric shapes. The models better approximate the actual shapes of relevant anatomical structures while allowing the application of model-based analysis on the simpler model parts. All parameters are derived from the analytical models, resulting in a simple voxel labeling scheme for classifying individual voxels in a CT volume. The algorithm’s performance is evaluated against expert-determined ground truth on a database of 42 scans and performance is quantified by free-response receiver-operator curves.
