An introduction to Chiral Perturbation Theory is given including a discussion of power counting, the Wess-Zumino term, the values of the coupling constants and the inclusion of the effects of other resonances.

Advances in particle physics are achieved on two experimental frontiers: 


Experiments using the highest available energies search for new degrees of freedom which are either expected in the standard theory (top, Higgs) or would point to new physics.


At the low-energy frontier, the main goal is to perform precision tests of the standard theory. To make up for the smaller energies, high sensitivity is an indispensable requirement (factories).

Why are the isoscalar neutral current axial-vector couplings and isoscalar nucleon anomalous moments small?

A nonperturbative algebraic approach, which deals with long-distance physics in earnest but also maintains a close contact with quark-line diagrams, has previously been applied to the derivation of the chemically bond..delta..Ichemically bond = (1/2 rule in the K..-->..2..pi.. decays. Reasonable estimates of the rates of D/sup 0/..--> pi..K-bar and phiK-bar/sup 0/ decays in terms of the rate of K/sub S//sup 0/..--> pi pi.. decay have also been obtained, to the approximation in which excited state contributions to the on-mass-shell intermediate states are being neglected for the moment. In this paper, we examine our unified approach to the D..--> pi..K-bar, KK-bar, and ..pi pi.. and K..--> pi pi.. decays further, now including the four-quark (QQ)(Q-barQ-bar) meson contribution to the on-mass-shell intermediate states. We find that the result provides us with a solution to the well-known puzzle in the observed rates of various Cabibbo-suppressed decays of the D/sup 0/ meson, particularly GAMMA(D/sup 0/..-->..K/sup +/K/sup -/)/GAMMA(D/sup 0/..--> pi../sup +/..pi../sup -/)approx. =3.6, which has never been solved in a systematic manner. In addition, it gives us a significantly improved prediction on GAMMA(D/sup 0/..--> pi..K-bar) in comparison with GAMMA(K/sub S//sup 0/..--> pi pi..).
