Two major energy-related problems confront the world in the
next 50 years. First, increased worldwide competition for
gradually depleting fossil fuel reserves (derived from past
photosynthesis) will lead to higher costs, both monetarily and politically. Second, atmospheric CO_2 levels are at their highest recorded level since records began. Further increases are predicted to produce large and uncontrollable impacts on the world climate. These projected impacts extend beyond climate to ocean acidification, because the ocean is a major sink for atmospheric CO2.1 Providing a future energy supply that is secure and CO_2-neutral will require switching to nonfossil energy sources such as wind, solar, nuclear, and geothermal energy and developing methods for transforming the energy produced by these new sources into forms that can be stored, transported, and used upon demand.

Frontiers, Opportunities, and Challenges in Biochemical and Chemical Catalysis of CO2 Fixation

The present invention provides a heterocyclic compound and an organic light-emitting device including the heterocyclic compound. The organic light-emitting devices using the heterocyclic compounds have high-efficiency, low driving voltage, high luminance and long lifespan.

It is shown that the ordinary semiclassical theory of the absorption of light by exciton states is not completely satisfactory (in contrast to the case of absorption due to interband transitions). A more complete theory is developed. It is shown that excitons are approximate bosons, and, in interaction with the electromagnetic field, the exciton field plays the role of the classical polarization field. The eigenstates of the system of crystal and radiation field are mixtures of photons and excitons. The ordinary one-quantum optical lifetime of an excitation is infinite. Absorption occurs only when "three-body" processes are introduced. The theory includes "local field" effects, leading to the Lorentz local field correction when it is applicable. A Smakula equation for the oscillator strength in terms of the integrated absorption constant is derived.

There is increased recognition by the world’s scientific, industrial, and political communities that the concentrations of greenhouse gases in the earth’s
atmosphere, particularly CO_2, are increasing. For
example, recent studies of Antarctic ice cores to
depths of over 3600 m, spanning over 420 000 years,
indicate an 80 ppm increase in atmospheric CO_2 in
the past 200 years (with most of this increase
occurring in the past 50 years) compared to the
previous 80 ppm increase that required 10 000 years.2
The 160 nation Framework Convention for Climate
Change (FCCC) in Kyoto focused world attention on
possible links between CO2 and future climate change
and active discussion of these issues continues.3 In
the United States, the PCAST report4 “Federal
Energy Research and Development for the Challenges
of the Twenty First Century” focused attention
on the growing worldwide demand for energy and the
need to move away from current fossil fuel utilization.
According to the U.S. DOE Energy Information
Administration,5 carbon emission from the transportation
(air, ground, sea), industrial (heavy manufacturing,
agriculture, construction, mining, chemicals,
petroleum), buildings (internal heating, cooling, lighting),
and electrical (power generation) sectors of the
World economy amounted to ca. 1823 million metric
tons (MMT) in 1990, with an estimated increase to
2466 MMT in 2008-2012 (Table 1).

Modern Strategies in Electroorganic Synthesis

Exciton-polaritons are bosonic quasiparticles that arise from the normal mode splitting of photons in a microcavity and excitons in a semiconductor material. One of the most intriguing extensions of such a light–matter interaction is the so-called ultrastrong coupling regime. It is achieved when the Rabi frequency (ΩR, the energy exchange rate between the emitter and the resonant photonic mode) reaches a considerable fraction of the emitter transition frequency, ω0. Here, we report a Rabi energy splitting (2ℏΩR) of 1.12 eV and record values of the coupling ratio (2ΩR/ω0) up to 0.6-fold the material band gap in organic semiconductor microcavities and up to 0.5-fold in monolithic heterostructure organic light-emitting diodes working at room temperature. Furthermore, we show that with such a large coupling strength it is possible to undress the exciton homogeneous linewidth from its inhomogeneous broadening, which allows for an unprecedented narrow emission line (below the cavity finesse) for such organic LE...

Exploring Light–Matter Interaction Phenomena under Ultrastrong Coupling Regime

The strong coupling of an excitonic transition with an electromagnetic mode results in composite quasi-particles called exciton polaritons, which have been shown to combine the best properties of their individual components in semiconductor microcavities. However, the physics and applications of polariton flows in organic materials and at room temperature are still unexplored because of the poor photon confinement in such structures. Here, we demonstrate that polaritons formed by the hybridization of organic excitons with a Bloch surface wave are able to propagate for hundreds of microns showing remarkable third-order nonlinear interactions upon high injection density. These findings pave the way for the study of organic nonlinear light–matter fluxes and for a technologically promising route of the realization of dissipation-less on-chip polariton devices operating at room temperature. The propagation and energy renormalization of exciton-polaritons, hybrid states of exciton and photon, can be controlled in an organic semiconductor at room temperature. Giovanni Lerario of CNR NANOTEC in Italy and co-workers fabricated a distributed feedback reflector from alternating layers of titanium dioxide and silicon dioxide on a glass substrate and coated it with a 35 nm thick layer of a perylene derivative. This cavity structure supports a novel type of polariton called Bloch surface wave polariton (BSWP), which propagates for more than 100 mm with a group velocity as high as of 150 mm ps-1. The resonance wavelength of the polariton is blue-shifted with increasing pump power into the distributed feedback reflector, indicating that the energy of the BSWP can be tuned. The results give hope for realizing on-chip polariton devices working at room temperature.

High-speed flow of interacting organic polaritons

The coupling of the electromagnetic field with an electronic transition gives rise, for strong enough light-matter interactions, to hybrid states called exciton-polaritons. When the energy exchanged between light and matter becomes a significant fraction of the material transition energy an extreme optical regime called ultrastrong coupling (USC) is achieved. We report a microcavity embedded p-i-n monolithic organic light emitting diode working in USC, employing a thin film of squaraine dye as active layer. A normalized coupling ratio of 30% has been achieved at room temperature. These USC devices exhibit a dispersion-less angle-resolved electroluminescence that can be exploited for the realization of innovative optoelectronic devices. Our results may open the way towards electrically pumped polariton lasers.
