Analysis of soil resistance on laterally loaded piles based on 3D soil–pile interaction

A fundamental study of pile-soil systems subjected to lateral loads in clay soil was conducted by using experimental tests and a lateral load-transfer approach. The emphasis was on an improved wedge failure model developed by considering three-dimensional combination forces and a new hyperbolic p-y criterion. A framework for determining the p-y curve on the basis of both theoretical analysis and experimental load test results is proposed. The proposed p-y method is shown to be capable of predicting the behavior of a large-diameter pile under lateral loading. The proposed p-y curves with an improved wedge model are more appropriate and realistic for representing a pile-soil interaction for laterally loaded piles in clay than the existing p-y method.

Wedge Failure Analysis of Soil Resistance on Laterally Loaded Piles in Clay

Most offshore and coastal structures are supported by pile foundations, which are subjected to large lateral loads due to wind, wave, and water currents. Water currents can induce scouring around piles that reduces lateral capacity and increases lateral deflection of a pile. Current design methods mostly consider the complete removal of soil layers around piles by scouring. In reality, however, scouring creates scour holes at different shapes, sizes, and depths. Their effects on the behavior of laterally loaded piles are not well investigated. A numerical model of a single pile in soft marine clay was first calibrated against field test data without scour. Then several key factors of scour were analyzed, such as the depth, width, and slope of the scour hole and the diameter and head fixity of the pile. Effect of Scour on the Behavior of Laterally Loaded Single Piles in Marine Clay

Abstract. To investigate the soil-pile interactive performance under lateral loads, a set of laboratory model tests was conducted on remoulded test bed of soft clay and medium dense sand. Then, a simplified boundary element analysis had been carried out assuming floating pile. In case of soft clay, it has been observed that lateral loads on piles can initiate the formation of a gap, soil heave and the tension crack in the vicinity of the soil surface and the interface, whereas in medium dense sand, a semi-elliptical depression zone can develop. Comparison of test and boundary element results indicates the accuracy of the solution developed. However, in the boundary element analysis, the possible shear stresses likely to be developed at the interface are ignored in order to simplify the existing complex equations. Moreover, it is unable to capture the influence of base restraint in case of a socketed pile. To bridge up this gap and to study the influence of the initial stress state and interface parameters, a field based case-study of laterally-loaded pile in layered soil with socketed tip is explored and modelled using the finite element method. The results of the model have been verified against known field measurements from a case-study. Parametric studies have been conducted to investigate the influence of the coefficient of lateral earth pressure and the interface strength reduction factor on the results of the model.

Effect of vertical load on the lateral response of offshore piles considering scour-hole geometry and stress history in marine clay

The load distribution and deformation of offshore piles are investigated using experimental tests and a numerical analysis. Special attention is given to the soil-pile rigidity of laterally loaded piles. Rigid-and flexible-pile analyses were conducted for comparison. A framework for determining the lateral load transfer curve (p-y curve) is proposed from field and laboratory model tests. A numerical analysis that takes into account the proposed p-y curves was performed for major parameters on pile flexibility such as the pile diameter, the pile length, pile bending stiffness, and the modulus of subgrade reaction. Based on the analysis, it is shown that there are significant differences in bending moment and lateral displacement in flexible piles rather than rigid piles. Through the comparative studies, it is found that the p-y curves influence the behavior of a flexible pile more than of a rigid pile and, thus, the magnitude and distribution of the p-y curves highly influence the pile behavior when it is ...
