The effectiveness of global protected areas for climate change mitigation
Laura Duncanson,Min-Hwang Liang,V. Leitold,John Armston,Sruthi M. Krishna Moorthy,Ralph Dubayah,Sébastien Costedoat,Brian J. Enquist,Lola Fatoyinbo,Scott J. Goetz,Mariano González-Roglich,Cory Merow,Patrick R. Roehrdanz,Karyn Tabor,Alex Zvoleff +14 more
TL;DR: In this paper , the global impact of protected areas (PAs) on the carbon cycle has not previously been quantified due to a lack of accurate global-scale carbon stock maps, and they used ~412 million lidar samples from NASA's GEDI mission to estimate a total PA aboveground carbon (C) stock of 61.43 Gt (+/- 0.31), 26% of all mapped terrestrial woody C.

Changes in forest composition and associated biophysical climate feedbacks across boreal North America
R. Massey,Brendan M. Rogers,Logan T. Berner,S. Cooperdock,Michelle C. Mack,Xanthe J. Walker,Scott J. Goetz +6 more
TL;DR: In this article , the authors use a map of continuous tree canopy and fractional deciduous cover to assess change over recent decades and find on average a small net decrease in deci-duous fraction cover from 2000 to 2015 across boreal North America, and from 1992 to 1992 across Canada, despite extensive fire disturbance that locally increased deci cuous vegetation.
