The effectiveness of global protected areas for climate change mitigation

TL;DR: In this paper , the global impact of protected areas (PAs) on the carbon cycle has not previously been quantified due to a lack of accurate global-scale carbon stock maps, and they used ~412 million lidar samples from NASA's GEDI mission to estimate a total PA aboveground carbon (C) stock of 61.43 Gt (+/- 0.31), 26% of all mapped terrestrial woody C.

Changes in forest composition and associated biophysical climate feedbacks across boreal North America

TL;DR: In this article , the authors use a map of continuous tree canopy and fractional deciduous cover to assess change over recent decades and find on average a small net decrease in deci-duous fraction cover from 2000 to 2015 across boreal North America, and from 1992 to 1992 across Canada, despite extensive fire disturbance that locally increased deci cuous vegetation.
