Abstract: Early automatic detection of fungal infections in post-harvest citrus fruits is especially important for the citrus industry because only a few infected fruits can spread the infection to a whole batch during operations such as storage or exportation, thus causing great economic losses. Nowadays, this detection is carried out manually by trained workers illuminating the fruit with dangerous ultraviolet lighting. The use of hyperspectral imaging systems makes it possible to advance in the development of systems capable of carrying out this detection process automatically. However, these systems present the disadvantage of generating a huge amount of data, which must be selected in order to achieve a result that is useful to the sector. This work proposes a methodology to select features in multi-class classification problems using the receiver operating characteristic curve, in order to detect rottenness in citrus fruits by means of hyperspectral images. The classifier used is a multilayer perceptron, trained with a new learning algorithm called extreme learning machine. The results are obtained using images of mandarins with the pixels labelled in five different classes: two kinds of sound skin, two kinds of decay and scars. This method yields a reduced set of features and a classification success rate of around 89%.

Abstract: A key aspect for the consumer when it comes to deciding on a particular product is the colour. In order to make fruit available to consumers as early as possible, the collection of oranges and mandarins begins before they ripen fully and reach their typical orange colour. As a result, they are therefore subjected to certain degreening treatments, depending on their standard colour citrus index at harvest. Recently, a mobile platform that incorporates a computer vision system capable of pre-sorting the fruit while it is being harvested has been developed as an aid in the harvesting task. However, due to the restrictions of working in the field, the computer vision system developed for this machine is limited in its technology and processing capacity compared to conventional systems. This work shows the optimised algorithms for estimating the colour of citrus in-line that were developed for this mobile platform and its performance is evaluated against that of a spectrophotometer used as a reference in the analysis of colour in food. The results obtained prove that our analysis system predicts the colour index of citrus with a good reliability (R 2 = 0.925) working in real time. Findings also show that it is effective for classifying harvested fruits in the field according to their colour.

Abstract: Computer vision systems are powerful tools to automate inspection tasks in agriculture. Typical target applications of such systems include grading, quality estimation, yield prediction and monitoring, among others. The capabilities of an artificial vision system go beyond the limited human capacity to evaluate long-term processes objectively and provide valuable data to take decisions that will have great influence in later operations. This work explores the application of machine vision techniques in viticulture from several approaches. The first approach is aimed at working outdoors, developing in-field systems capable of assessing the canopy features of the vineyard (Vitis vinifera L.) by taking digital images and applying computer vision systems. The second approach is aimed at analysing cluster morphology using image analysis. Berry number per cluster and cluster weight were estimated using several algorithms of image processing. Lately, machine vision has been used as a tool to automate the measurement of berry size and weight under laboratory conditions. Manual measurement of the canopy features and yield components are tedious and subjective tasks that can be time-consuming and labour demanding. In this regard, by means of computer vision techniques, a large set of samples can be automatically measured, saving time and providing more objective and precise information.

Abstract: Nowadays, there is a growing demand for quality fruits and vegetables that are simple to prepare and consume, like minimally processed fruits. These products have to accomplish some particular characteristics to make them more attractive to the consumers, like a similar appearance and the total absence of external defects. Although recent advances in machine vision have allowed for the automatic inspection of fresh fruit and vegetables, there are no commercially available equipments for sorting of minority processed fruits, like arils of pomegranate (Punica granatum L) or segments of Satsuma mandarin (Citrus unshiu) ready to eat. This work describes a complete solution based on machine vision for the automatic inspection and classification of these fruits based on their estimated quality. The classification is based on morphological and colour features estimated from images taken in-line, and their analysis using statistical methods in order to grade the fruit into commercial categories.
