This paper reviews the state-of-the art in vibration energy harvesting for wireless, self-powered microsystems. Vibration-powered generators are typically, although not exclusively, inertial spring and mass systems. The characteristic equations for inertial-based generators are presented, along with the specific damping equations that relate to the three main transduction mechanisms employed to extract energy from the system. These transduction mechanisms are: piezoelectric, electromagnetic and electrostatic. Piezoelectric generators employ active materials that generate a charge when mechanically stressed. A comprehensive review of existing piezoelectric generators is presented, including impact coupled, resonant and human-based devices. Electromagnetic generators employ electromagnetic induction arising from the relative motion between a magnetic flux gradient and a conductor. Electromagnetic generators presented in the literature are reviewed including large scale discrete devices and wafer-scale integrated versions. Electrostatic generators utilize the relative movement between electrically isolated charged capacitor plates to generate energy. The work done against the electrostatic force between the plates provides the harvested energy. Electrostatic-based generators are reviewed under the classifications of in-plane overlap varying, in-plane gap closing and out-of-plane gap closing; the Coulomb force parametric generator and electret-based generators are also covered. The coupling factor of each transduction mechanism is discussed and all the devices presented in the literature are summarized in tables classified by transduction type; conclusions are drawn as to the suitability of the various techniques.

Energy harvesting vibration sources for microsystems applications

The field of power harvesting has experienced significant growth over the past few years due to the ever-increasing desire to produce portable and wireless electronics with extended lifespans. Current portable and wireless devices must be designed to include electrochemical batteries as the power source. The use of batteries can be troublesome due to their limited lifespan, thus necessitating their periodic replacement. In the case of wireless sensors that are to be placed in remote locations, the sensor must be easily accessible or of a disposable nature to allow the device to function over extended periods of time. Energy scavenging devices are designed to capture the ambient energy surrounding the electronics and convert it into usable electrical energy. The concept of power harvesting works towards developing self-powered devices that do not require replaceable power supplies. A number of sources of harvestable ambient energy exist, including waste heat, vibration, electromagnetic waves, wind, flowing water, and solar energy. While each of these sources of energy can be effectively used to power remote sensors, the structural and biological communities have placed an emphasis on scavenging vibrational energy with piezoelectric materials. This article will review recent literature in the field of power harvesting and present the current state of power harvesting in its drive to create completely self-powered devices.

A review of power harvesting using piezoelectric materials (2003–2006)

This tutorial/survey paper: (1) provides a concise point of departure for researchers and practitioners alike wishing to assess the current state of the art in the control and monitoring of civil engineering structures; and (2) provides a link between structural control and other fields of control theory, pointing out both differences and similarities, and points out where future research and application efforts are likely to prove fruitful. Experimental Evaluation of Deployment Time of Active Hood Lift System According to Structural Improvement

Self-sensing actuation of shape memory alloy (SMA) means to sense both mechanical and thermal properties/variables through the measurement of any internally changing electrical property such as resistance/inductance/capacitance/phase/frequency of an actuating material under actuation. The main contribution of this paper is to obtain the stiffness from the measurement of electrical resistance of a shape memory coil during variable stiffness actuation thereby, simulating its self-sensing characteristics by developing a Support Vector Machine (SVM) regression and nonlinear regression model. Experimental evaluation of the stiffness of a passive biased shape memory coil (SMC) in antagonistic connection, for different electrical (like activation current, excitation frequency, and duty cycle) and mechanical input conditions (for example, the operating condition pre-stress) is done in terms of change in electrical resistance through the measurement of the instantaneous value. The stiffness is then calculated from force and displacement, while by this scheme it is sensed from the electrical resistance. To fulfill the deficiency of a dedicated physical stiffness sensor, self-sensing stiffness by a Soft Sensor (equivalently SVM) is a boon for variable stiffness actuation. A simple and well-proven voltage division method is used for indirect stiffness sensing; wherein, voltages across the shape memory coil and series resistance provide the electrical resistance. The predicted stiffness of SVM matches well with the experimental stiffness and this is validated by evaluating the performances such as root mean squared error (RMSE), the goodness of fit and correlation coefficient. This self-sensing variable stiffness actuation (SSVSA) provides several advantages in applications of SMA: sensor-less systems, miniaturized systems, simplified control systems and possible stiffness feedback control.

Self-Sensing Variable Stiffness Actuation of Shape Memory Coil by an Inferential Soft Sensor

This paper presents force-feedback control performance of a haptic device using a controllable electrorheological (ER)
fluid. A spherical type of joint is devised and its torque characteristic is analyzed by considering Bingham property of
ER fluid. In order to embody a human organ into virtual space, a volumetric deformable object is adopted. The virtual
object is then mathematically formulated by the shape retaining chain linked (S-chain) model. After evaluating reflection
force, computational time, and compatibility with real time control, the virtual environment with the ER haptic device is
established by incorporating reflection force and desired position originated from an organ and master, respectively. In
order to achieve force trajectories at the haptic device in which the force comes from the virtual space, a sliding mode
controller (SMC) is formulated and experimentally realized. Tracking control performances for various operating
conditions are presented in time domain, and their tracking errors are evaluated.

Force control of ER fluid based haptic device in virtual environment

This paper presents new feedback actuators to achieve an accurate position control of a flexible gantry robot arm. The translational motion in the plane is generated by two d.c. motors and controlled by employing electro-rheological (ER) clutch actuators. The generated motion can be continuously controlled by controlling the intensity of electric fields imposed to the ER fluid domains of bi- directional rotating ER clutches. On the other hand, during control action of the translational motion, a flexible arm attached to the moving part produces undesirable oscillations due to its inherent flexibility. The oscillations are actively suppressed by employing feedback voltage to the piezoceramic actuator bonded on the surface of the flexible arm. Consequently, an accurate position control at the end-point of the flexible arm can be achieved. In order to accomplish this control target, the governing equations of the proposed system are derived and rewritten as transfer functions to design a robust H(infinity ) controller. The control electric fields to be applied to the ER clutch and the control voltage for the piezoceramic actuator are determined via the loop shaping design procedures in the H(infinity ) control technique.
