Integrating micro-algae into wastewater treatment: A review
Seyedeh Fatemeh Mohsenpour,Sebastian Hennige,Nicholas Willoughby,Adebayo J. Adeloye,Tony Gutierrez +4 more
TL;DR: A critical account of micro-algae as an important step in wastewater treatment for enhancing the reduction of N, P and the chemical oxygen demand in wastewater, whilst utilising a fraction of the energy demand of conventional biological treatment systems.
Journal ArticleDOI
Spectral conversion of light for enhanced microalgae growth rates and photosynthetic pigment production
TL;DR: The proposed illumination strategy offers improved microalgae growth without resorting to artificial light sources, reducing energy use and costs of cultivation.
Journal ArticleDOI
Luminescent photobioreactor design for improved algal growth and photosynthetic pigment production through spectral conversion of light
TL;DR: The results indicated that the red luminescent photobioreactor enhanced biomass production in both strains of microalgae while pigmentation was induced under different light colours.
Journal ArticleDOI
Effect of CO2 aeration on cultivation of microalgae in luminescent photobioreactors
TL;DR: Investigating the influence of CO 2 aeration on biomass production, carbon dioxide fixation rate, pH, cell’s essential elements such as carbon, nitrogen, and hydrogen, as well as lipid content, whilst under a range of luminescence-modified lighting conditions demonstrated that the combination of blue light and 15% CO 2 provided a condition in which higher rates of lipid accumulation was induced in both algal strains.
Journal ArticleDOI
Effect of pot-ale enrichment on the treatment efficiency of primary settled wastewater by the microalga Chlorella vulgaris
Laurence Evans,Seyedeh Fatemeh Mohsenpour,Sebastian Hennige,Nik Willoughby,Adebayo J. Adeloye,Tony Gutierrez +5 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the performance of microalgae under static cultivation for primary settled municipal wastewater (PSW) treatment as a low energy treatment process was evaluated and the availability of a suitable carbon substrate was determined to be the main limiting factor affecting the algal treatment performance.
