Artisanal and small-scale mining as an extralegal economy: De Soto and the redefinition of “formalization”

TL;DR: In this paper, the role of formalization in artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM) in sub-Saharan Africa, focusing specifically on Uganda, is addressed. But the meaning of formalisation is not always clear; nor how formalization contributes to economic development.
Journal ArticleDOI

Mercury contamination in fish from gold mining areas in Indonesia and human health risk assessment.

TL;DR: Using the single-compartment model to estimate mercury levels in blood and hair from daily intake dose, sub-area P4 showed the highest levels, higher than the upper limit guideline for pregnant women, but still lower than threshold levels associated with observed clinical effects.
Journal ArticleDOI

The myth of alternative livelihoods: artisanal mining, gold and poverty

TL;DR: This article argued that gold rushes are forces of economic history undeterred by policy, and that small-scale mining activities are expanding throughout the world because of gold's firmly rooted market value.

The needs of miners: political ethics, mercury abatement, and intervention in artisanal gold mining communities

TL;DR: In this article, the role of donor-funded international projects to reduce mercury pollution from artisanal and small-scale gold mining (ASM) is examined, and a new approach to international intervention is proposed based on three interdependent principles of formalization, capitalization, and education.
