We show nanoscale phase stabilization of CsPbI 3 quantum dots (QDs) to low temperatures that can be used as the active component of efficient optoelectronic devices. CsPbI 3 is an all-inorganic analog to the hybrid organic cation halide perovskites, but the cubic phase of bulk CsPbI 3 (α-CsPbI 3 )—the variant with desirable band gap—is only stable at high temperatures. We describe the formation of α-CsPbI 3 QD films that are phase-stable for months in ambient air. The films exhibit long-range electronic transport and were used to fabricate colloidal perovskite QD photovoltaic cells with an open-circuit voltage of 1.23 volts and efficiency of 10.77%. These devices also function as light-emitting diodes with low turn-on voltage and tunable emission.

Quantum dot-induced phase stabilization of α-CsPbI3 perovskite for high-efficiency photovoltaics.

Metal halide perovskites represent a flourishing area of research, driven by both their potential application in photo-voltaics and optoelectronics, and for the fundamental science underpinning their unique optoelectronic properties. The advent of colloidal methods for the synthesis of halide perovskite nanocrystals has brought to the attention inter-esting aspects of this new type of materials, above all their defect-tolerance. This review aims to provide an updated survey of this fast-moving field, with a main focus on their colloidal synthesis. We examine the chemistry and the ca-pability of different colloidal synthetic routes to control the shape, size and optical properties of the resulting nano-crystals. We also provide an up to date overview of their post-synthesis transformations, and summarize the various so-lution processes aimed at fabricating halide perovskite-based nanocomposites. We then review the fundamental optical properties of halide perovskite nanocrystals, by focusing on their linear optical properties, on the effects of quantum confinement and, then, on the current knowledge of their exciton binding energies. We also discuss the emergence of non-linear phenomena such as multiphoton absorption, biexcitons and carrier multiplication. At last, we provide an outlook in the field, with the most cogent open questions and possible future directions.

Metal Halide Perovskite Nanocrystals: Synthesis, Post-Synthesis Modifications, and Their Optical Properties.

Halide perovskite quantum dots (QDs), primarily regarded as optoelectronic materials for LED and photovoltaic devices, have not been applied for photochemical conversion (e.g., water splitting or CO2 reduction) applications because of their insufficient stability in the presence of moisture or polar solvents. Herein, we report the use of CsPbBr3 QDs as novel photocatalysts to convert CO2 into solar fuels in nonaqueous media. Under AM 1.5G simulated illumination, the CsPbBr3 QDs steadily generated and injected electrons into CO2, catalyzing CO2 reduction at a rate of 23.7 μmol/g h with a selectivity over 99.3%. Additionally, through the construction of a CsPbBr3 QD/graphene oxide (CsPbBr3 QD/GO) composite, the rate of electron consumption increased 25.5% because of improved electron extraction and transport. This study is anticipated to provide new opportunities to utilize halide perovskite QD materials in photocatalytic applications.

A CsPbBr3 Perovskite Quantum Dot/Graphene Oxide Composite for Photocatalytic CO2 Reduction

The formation energies and charge-transition levels of intrinsic point defects in lead halide perovskite CsPbBr3 are studied from first-principles calculations. It is shown that the formation energy of dominant defect under Br-rich growth condition is much lower than that under moderate or Br-poor conditions. Thus avoiding the Br-rich condition can help to reduce the defect concentration. Interestingly, CsPbBr3 is found to be highly defect-tolerant in terms of its electronic structure. Most of the intrinsic defects induce shallow transition levels. Only a few defects with high formation energies can create deep transition levels. Therefore, CsPbBr3 can maintain its good electronic quality despite the presence of defects. Such defect tolerance feature can be attributed to the lacking of bonding–antibonding interaction between the conduction bands and valence bands.

High Defect Tolerance in Lead Halide Perovskite CsPbBr3

Colloidal nanocrystals of fully inorganic cesium lead halide (CsPbX3, X = Cl, Br, I, or combinations thereof) perovskites have attracted much attention for photonic and optoelectronic applications. Herein, we demonstrate a facile room-temperature (e.g., 25 °C), ligand-mediated reprecipitation strategy for systematically manipulating the shape of CsPbX3 colloidal nanocrystals, such as spherical quantum dots, nanocubes, nanorods, and nanoplatelets. The colloidal spherical quantum dots of CsPbX3 were synthesized with photoluminescence (PL) quantum yield values up to >80%, and the corresponding PL emission peaks covering the visible range from 380 to 693 nm. Ligand-Mediated Synthesis of Shape-Controlled Cesium Lead Halide Perovskite Nanocrystals via Reprecipitation Process at Room Temperature

Colloidal nanocrystals of lead halide perovskites have recently received great attention due to their remarkable performance in optoelectronic applications (e.g., light-emitting devices, flexible electronics, and photodetectors). However, the use of lead remains of great concern due to its toxicity and bioaccumulation in the ecosystem; herein we report a strategy to address this issue by using tetravalent tin (Sn4+) instead of divalent lead (Pb2+) to synthesize stable Cs2SnI6 perovskite nanocrystals. The shapes of as-synthesized Cs2SnI6 nanocrystals are tuned from spherical quantum dots, nanorods, nanowires, and nanobelts to nanoplatelets via a facile hot-injection process using inexpensive and nontoxic commercial precursors.
