Biodiesel is a recognized replacement for diesel fuel in compressed ignition engines due to its significant environmental benefits. The purpose of this study is to investigate the engine performance and emissions produced from Jatropha curcas, Ceiba pentandra and Calophyllum inophyllum biodiesel in compressed ignition engine. The biodiesel production process and properties are discussed and a comparison of the three biodiesels as well as diesel fuel is undertaken. After that, engine performance and emissions testing was conducted using biodiesel blends 10%, 20%, 30% and 50% in a diesel engine at full throttle load. The engine performance shows that those biodiesel blends are suitable for use in diesel engines. A 10% biodiesel blend shows the best engine performance in terms of engine torque, engine power, fuel consumption and brake thermal efficiency among the all blending ratios for the three biodiesel blends. Biodiesel blends have also shown a significant reduction in CO2, CO and smoke opacity with a slight increase in NOx emissions.

How to improve the combustion efficiency and reduce harmful emissions has been a hot research topic in the engine field and related disciplines. Researchers have found that nano-additives to diesel-biodiesel fuel blends have achieved significant results. Many research results and both current and previous studies on nanoparticles have shown that nano-additives play an essential role in improving the performance of internal combustion engines and reducing the emission of harmful substances. This paper summarizes the recent research progress of nanoparticles as additives for diesel-biodiesel fuel blends. Firstly, the excellent properties of nanoparticles are described in detail, and the preparation methods are summarized and discussed. Secondly, the effects of several commonly used nanoparticles as diesel-biodiesel fuel blends on combustion performance and harmful substances emissions in terms of combustion thermal efficiency, brake specific fuel consumption, CO, UHC and NOx, are reviewed. Finally, the effects of nano-additives on internal combustion engines, the environment and human health are discussed. The work carried out in this paper can effectively contribute to the application of nanomaterials in the fuel field. Based on our work, the researchers can efficiently select suitable nano-additives that enable internal combustion engines to achieve efficient combustion and low-emission characteristics.

The present work illuminates numerical evaluation of neem biodiesel’s (NBD) potentiality for energizing the modern diesel engines. The blends were prepared of NBD and diesel and were mixed in various volumetric percentages (20%, 50%, and 100%). The paper explains the effect of injection timing and blends ratios on the performance and emission of a compression ignition engine. The results were obtained from Diesel-RK software were validated experimentally. The simulation study performed on the software comprehends the fuel spray characteristics at varying fuel injection timings. The simulation study flag-posts that fuel injection at 19 deg. bTDC provided a considerable reduction in Nitrogen emissions and NBD20 blend as the best choice when performance and emission parameters were considered.

Effect of fuel injection timing on CI engine fuelled with neem biodiesel blends–a comparative study of experimental and numerical simulation

Heat transfer through natural convection from semicircular fin array is investigated numerically by using CFD software. The effect of heat input and fin parameter (fin length, height, thickness, and spacing) on semicircular fin has been discussed. From analysis of the results in the semicircular fin using regression analysis, analysis of variance (ANOVA), conceptual signal-noise (S/N) ratio approach, and Taguchi optimization method, it is noticed that fin thickness and length are more dominant to maximize Nua/wt ratio while fin spacing and fin height are less dominant. Thus optimum combination is A1 (1500 mm) B1 (1) C2 (10 mm) D1 (1 mm) of L16 array table. For maximizing the ha, fin spacing is more dominant than other parameter. The optimum combination is A3 (1500 mm) B1 (1) C1 (10 mm) D3 (2.5 mm) of L16 array table. Fin length and spacing are significant for minimizing the average temperature of fin. Optimum combination is A2 (1500 mm) B2 (2) C1 (20 mm) D1 (1 mm) L16 array table.
