Phytocannabinoids: a unified critical inventory.

In the twelve years since the first review article dealing with chemical constituents of the Hepaticae appeared in this series as Volume 42 (19), several short reviews concerned with chemical constituents of bryophytes have been published (22, 96, 144, 265, 271, 647, 649, 650) In 1988, a Symposium on Chemistry and Chemical Taxonomy of Bryophytes was organised on the behalf of the Phytochemical Society of Europe; the proceedings of this meeting appeared as a book entitled Bryophytes: Their Chemistry and Chemical Taxonomy (651) The symposium concerned itself with phytochemical, biochemical, botanical, chemotaxonomical, pharmaceutical, biotechnological and environmental aspects of bryophytes as well as with the synthesis of the terpenoids and aromatic compounds bryophytes elaborate The physiological and biochemical aspects of bryophytes have also been described in a recent book Bryophytes Development: Physiology and Biochemistry (139)

Chemical Constituents of the Bryophytes

This brief account describes our progress on the regioselective synthesis of medium-sized heterocycles. Formation of the medium-ring (seven-, eight-, nine-membered) oxa-, aza-, thia, oxa-thia- and aza-thia-heterocycles has been achieved by the intramolecular metal-mediated cyclization (especially Pd-catalyzed), diene and enyne metathesis, thiol-mediated cyclization, iodocyclization and azide-alkyne cycloaddition.

Regioselective formation of medium-ring heterocycles of biological relevance by intramolecular cyclization

The ether extract of the New Zealand liverwort Radula marginata afforded a new cannabinoid type bibenzyl compound named perrottetinenic acid, and two new bibenzyls, together with a known cannabinoid, perrottetinene. Their structures were established by two dimensional (2D) NMR spectral data. The structure of perrottetinenic acid was a similar to that of Δ1-tetrahydrocannabinol, a known hallucinogen. Cannabinoid type bibenzyls have been isolated from liverwort Radula perrottetii, though have not previously been reported from the liverwort R. marginata.

2,3-Dihydrobenzofurans can be diastereoselectively prepared by condensation of aromatic aldehydes with 2,3-dihydrobenzoxasilepines under the catalysis of Ag(I) complexes, and in the presence of a source of fluoride ion. The application of this strategy by using chiral catalysts leads to a new enantioselective total synthesis of natural cis-pterocarpans and their trans isomers. Through this method, the first enantioselective total synthesis of the antifungal agent (-)-pterocarpin was achieved. In addition, a new entry into the heteroaromatic system of 2,5-dihydrobenzoxepine is also presented.
