Journal ArticleDOI
Lactobacillus species as biomarkers and agents that can promote various aspects of vaginal health.
Mariya I. Petrova,Mariya I. Petrova,Elke Lievens,Elke Lievens,Shweta Malik,Shweta Malik,Nicole C. E. Imholz,Nicole C. E. Imholz,Sarah Lebeer,Sarah Lebeer +9 more
TL;DR: The widely documented beneficial role of vaginal Lactobacillus species demonstrates the potential of data on the composition and activity of lactobacilli as biomarkers for vaginal health, and the substantiation and further validation of such biomarkers will allow the design of better targeted probiotic strategies.
Journal Article
Ellagic acid & gallic acid from Lagerstroemia speciosa L. inhibit HIV-1 infection through inhibition of HIV-1 protease & reverse transcriptase activity
Nutan,Manoj Modi,Tanvi Goel,Tiyasa Das,Shweta Malik,Samiksha Suri,Ajay Kumar Singh Rawat,Sharad Srivastava,Rakesh Tuli,Swadesh Malhotra,Satish K. Gupta +10 more
TL;DR: The active components responsible for anti-HIV activity were gallic acid and ellagic acid, through inhibition of reverse transcriptase and HIV protease, respectively and hence could be regarded as promising candidates for the development of topical anti-hIV-1 agents.
Journal ArticleDOI
The Highly Autoaggregative and Adhesive Phenotype of the Vaginal Lactobacillus plantarum Strain CMPG5300 Is Sortase Dependent
Shweta Malik,Shweta Malik,Mariya I. Petrova,Mariya I. Petrova,Ingmar Claes,Ingmar Claes,Tine Verhoeven,Pieter Busschaert,Mario Vaneechoutte,Bart Lievens,Ivo Lambrichts,Roland J. Siezen,Jan Balzarini,Jos Vanderleyden,Sarah Lebeer,Sarah Lebeer +15 more
TL;DR: Results indicate that the housekeeping sortase SrtA of CMPG5300 is a key determinant of the peculiar surface properties of this vaginal Lactobacillus strain.
Journal ArticleDOI
High mannose-specific lectin Msl mediates key interactions of the vaginal Lactobacillus plantarum isolate CMPG5300.
Shweta Malik,Shweta Malik,Mariya I. Petrova,Mariya I. Petrova,Nicole C. E. Imholz,Nicole C. E. Imholz,Tine Verhoeven,Sam Noppen,Els J.M. Van Damme,Sandra Liekens,Jan Balzarini,Dominique Schols,Jos Vanderleyden,Sarah Lebeer,Sarah Lebeer +14 more
TL;DR: Using a combination of molecular lectin characterization and functional assays, it is shown that lectin-sugar interactions play a key role in host and pathogen interactions of a prototype isolate of the vaginal Lactobacillus microbiota.
Journal ArticleDOI
Draft Genome Sequence of Lactobacillus plantarum CMPG5300, a Human Vaginal Isolate
Shweta Malik,Shweta Malik,Roland J. Siezen,Bernadet Renckens,Mario Vaneechoutte,Jos Vanderleyden,Sarah Lebeer,Sarah Lebeer +7 more
TL;DR: The draft genome of a highly auto-aggregating Lactobacillus plantarum strain isolated from a human vagina provides an adhesive and co-aggRegative potential with various pathogens, which could be of significance in the vaginal niche.
