Thermal/catalytic cracking of hydrocarbons for the production of olefins; a state-of-the-art review III: Process modeling and simulation

The cross-flow heat exchanger is a special type of heat exchanger involving the exchange of heat in the case of two fluids flowing in an orthogonal direction. The heat exchanger often comprises of a number of cylinders carrying hot fluid, along with the colder fluid flowing across/over the tubes or cylinders. The system also comprises of additional fins across the tube cross-section along with delta winglets so as to generate the additional turbulence for increasing the rate of heat transfer. The addition of vortex generators helps in promoting system miniaturization. Moreover, the implementation of the passive techniques in cross-flow heat exchangers significantly escalates the pumping power requirement. Thereby, the objective of this paper is to carry out a review on the recent developments and their potential candidature for improving the thermal performance of heat exchanger. The latest state-of-the-art developments are deeply discussed with its evaluating parameters and some recommendations are made for further investigation in this area.

Salinity gradient solar pond is an integral thermal energy collection and storage device. Energy extracted from the storage zone can be utilized for power generation, process heating, drying agriculture products, and desalination. In case of buried solar pond, the thermal performance of the pond is highly dependent on the ground conditions. A numerical model was used to investigate the effect of depth of ground water table and thermal conductivity of the soil on the storage zone temperature. The model used has a good agreement with the experimental data. It was found that storage zone temperature and warm-up period is highly influence by the ground conditions.

Effect of Ground Condition on the Storage Zone Temperature of Salinity Gradient Solar Pond

A salinity gradient solar pond is one of the technologies which can collect and store thermal energy. It consists of three zones, upper convective zone, non-convective zone, and lower convective zone. The thermal energy received from the sun is stored in the lower convective zone and can be extracted for different low temperature applications. The amount of energy extracted is significantly influenced by the climatic conditions of the location. In this present study, a computational thermal model is used to investigate the behavior of solar pond. The temperature of the lower convective zone is very much influenced by the selection of commencing day of heat extraction. The impact of the rate of heat extraction and commencing day of heat extraction on the temperature behavior of the lower convective zone is reported. It is found that the temperature achieved by LCZ decreases with the rise in the rate of heat extraction. The thermal behavior of the solar pond should be precisely investigated before the selection of commencing day of heat extraction for the particular location.
