Journal ArticleDOI
Heart Rate Variability and Progression of Coronary Atherosclerosis
Heikki V. Huikuri,Vesa Jokinen,Mikko Syvänne,Markku S. Nieminen,K.E. Juhani Airaksinen,Markku J. Ikäheimo,Juhani Koistinen,Heikki Kauma,Antero Kesäniemi,Silja Majahalme,Kari Niemelä,M. Heikki Frick +11 more
TL;DR: Low HR variability analyzed from ambulatory ECG predicts rapid progression of coronary artery disease, and progression of focal coronary atherosclerosis was independently predicted by the SDNN.
Journal ArticleDOI
Usefulness of Heart Rate to Predict Cardiac Events in Treated Patients With High-Risk Systemic Hypertension
Stevo Julius,Paolo Palatini,Sverre E. Kjeldsen,Alberto Zanchetti,Michael A. Weber,Gordon T. McInnes,Hans R. Brunner,Giuseppe Mancia,M. Anthony Schork,Tsushung A. Hua,Bjoern Holzhauer,Dion H. Zappe,Silja Majahalme,Kenneth Jamerson,Nevres Koylan +14 more
TL;DR: An increased HR is a long-term predictor of cardiovascular events in patients with high-risk hypertension and this effect was not modified by good blood pressure control.
Journal ArticleDOI
The Valsartan Antihypertensive Long-Term Use Evaluation (VALUE) Trial: Outcomes in Patients Receiving Monotherapy
Stevo Julius,Michael A. Weber,Sverre E. Kjeldsen,Gordon T. McInnes,Alberto Zanchetti,Hans R. Brunner,John H. Laragh,M. Anthony Schork,Tsushung A. Hua,John Amerena,Ivan Balazovjech,Graham Cassel,Bela Herczeg,Nevres Koylan,Dieter Magometschnigg,Silja Majahalme,Felipe Martinez,Willie Oigman,Ricardo Seabra Gomes,Jun Ren Zhu +19 more
TL;DR: Despite lower absolute event rates in monotherapy patients, the relative risks of heart failure and new-onset diabetes favored valsartan, and these findings support the feasibility of comparative prospective trials in lower-risk hypertensive patients.
Journal ArticleDOI
The changing face of sympathetic overactivity in hypertension
Stevo Julius,Silja Majahalme +1 more
TL;DR: Data is presented to indicate that several haemodynamic changes in hypertension such as elevated cardiac output and heart rate and alteration in vascular resistance are neurogenic, and a hypothesis where down-regulation of β-adrenergic responsiveness plays a major role in explaining the haemodynamics changes as well as metabolic alterations, such as hyperinsulinaemia and even the gain of weight in hypertension is proposed.
Journal ArticleDOI
Pulse wave velocity reference values in healthy adults aged 26–75 years
Teemu Koivistoinen,Tiit Kööbi,A. Jula,N. Hutri-Kähönen,Olli T. Raitakari,Silja Majahalme,Katriina Kukkonen-Harjula,Terho Lehtimäki,Antti Reunanen,Jorma Viikari,Väinö Turjanmaa,Tuomo Nieminen,Mika Kähönen +12 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the arterial pulse wave velocity (PWV) was measured by measuring the time difference of systolic pulse waves in arteries from the aortic arch to the popliteal artery using whole-body impedance cardiography (ICG).
