Journal ArticleDOI
Increased Melatonin Signaling Is a Risk Factor for Type 2 Diabetes
Tiinamaija Tuomi,Cecilia Nagorny,Pratibha Singh,Hedvig Bennet,Qian Yu,Ida Alenkvist,Bo Isomaa,Bjarne Östman,Johan Söderström,Anu-Katriina Pesonen,Silja Martikainen,Katri Räikkönen,Tom Forsén,Liisa Hakaste,Peter Almgren,Peter Almgren,Petter Storm,Olof Asplund,Liliya Shcherbina,Malin Fex,João Fadista,Anders Tengholm,Nils Wierup,Leif Groop,Leif Groop,Hindrik Mulder +25 more
TL;DR: Increased MTNR1B expression in human islets from risk G-allele carriers is demonstrated, which likely leads to a reduction in insulin release, increasing T2D risk and supporting a model where enhanced melatonin signaling in islets reduces insulin secretion, leading to hyperglycemia and greater future risk of T1D.
Journal ArticleDOI
Temporal associations between daytime physical activity and sleep in children
Anu-Katriina Pesonen,Noora M. Sjöstén,Noora M. Sjöstén,Karen A. Matthews,Kati Heinonen,Silja Martikainen,Eero Kajantie,Tuija Tammelin,Johan G. Eriksson,Timo E. Strandberg,Katri Räikkönen +10 more
TL;DR: The relationship between a higher level of PA and poorer sleep is bidirectional, and within-person findings challenge epidemiological findings showing that more active people report better sleep.
Journal ArticleDOI
Poor sleep and neurocognitive function in early adolescence.
Liisa Kuula,Anu-Katriina Pesonen,Silja Martikainen,Eero Kajantie,Eero Kajantie,Jari Lahti,Timo E. Strandberg,Soile Tuovinen,Kati Heinonen,Riikka Pyhälä,Marius Lahti,Katri Räikkönen +11 more
TL;DR: In adolescent girls, poor sleep quality was only weakly associated with poorer executive functioning, while in boys, poorer sleep quantity and quality were associated with an inattentive pattern of executive functioning.
Journal ArticleDOI
Continuity and change in poor sleep from childhood to early adolescence.
Anu-Katriina Pesonen,Silja Martikainen,Kati Heinonen,Karoliina Wehkalampi,Jari Lahti,Eero Kajantie,Katri Räikkönen +6 more
TL;DR: Sleep in early adolescence can be anticipated from childhood sleep patterns and disorders, but is not associated with pubertal maturity, although sleep duration becomes shorter, sleep quality may improve during early adolescence.
Journal ArticleDOI
Higher levels of physical activity are associated with lower hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenocortical axis reactivity to psychosocial stress in children.
Silja Martikainen,Anu-Katriina Pesonen,Jari Lahti,Kati Heinonen,Kimmo Feldt,Riikka Pyhälä,Tuija Tammelin,Eero Kajantie,Johan G. Eriksson,Timo E. Strandberg,Timo E. Strandberg,Katri Räikkönen +11 more
TL;DR: In this article, the authors examined whether objectively measured daytime physical activity was associated with diurnal hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenocortical axis (HPAA) activity and HPAA responses to psychosocial stress.
