Journal ArticleDOI
Dog culling and replacement in an area endemic for visceral leishmaniasis in Brazil.
Cáris Maroni Nunes,Valéria Marçal Felix de Lima,Henrique Borges de Paula,Silvia Helena Venturoli Perri,Andréa Maria Andrade,Francisca Elda Ferreira Dias,Marcelo Nascimento Burattini +6 more
TL;DR: In the studied CVL endemic area of Brazil, euthanasia and the subsequent replacement ratio were high, increasing the dog population turnover and leading to a younger population that might be more susceptible to a variety of other infectious diseases in addition to CVL.
Journal ArticleDOI
Coinfection of Leishmania chagasi with Toxoplasma gondii, Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV) and Feline Leukemia Virus (FeLV) in cats from an endemic area of zoonotic visceral leishmaniasis
Ludmila Silva Vicente Sobrinho,Claudio Nazaretian Rossi,Juliana Peloi Vides,Eveline Tozzi Braga,Ana Amélia Domingues Gomes,Valéria Marçal Felix de Lima,Silvia Helena Venturoli Perri,Diego Generoso,Helio Langoni,Christian M. Leutenegger,Alexander Welker Biondo,Alexander Welker Biondo,Márcia Dalastra Laurenti,Mary Marcondes +13 more
TL;DR: Cats living in endemic areas of visceral leishmaniasis are significantly more likely to be coinfected with FIV, which may present confounding clinical signs and therefore cats in such areas should be always carefully screened for coinfections.
Journal ArticleDOI
The effect of season on semen characteristics and freezability in Bos indicus and Bos taurus bulls in the southeastern region of Brazil.
TL;DR: Ejaculate volume, sperm concentration, gross-motility, progressive sperm motility, vigor and morphological sperm defects were significantly influenced by season and genotype (p < 0.05).
Journal ArticleDOI
Relationship between dog culling and incidence of human visceral leishmaniasis in an endemic area.
Cáris Maroni Nunes,Marina Mota Pires,Karinne Marques da Silva,Filipe Daniel Assis,Jesualdo Gonçalves Filho,Silvia Helena Venturoli Perri +5 more
TL;DR: Reduction of human VL incidence was statistically correlated to dog euthanasia rate when it was analyzed for the period of two years after application of this measure, and factors that may influence this relationship are considered.
Journal ArticleDOI
Clinical and parasitological evaluation of dogs naturally infected by Leishmania (Leishmania) chagasi submitted to treatment with meglumine antimoniate
Fabiana Augusta Ikeda-Garcia,Raimundo Souza Lopes,Fábia Judice Marques,Valéria Marçal Felix de Lima,Celina Kazue Morinishi,Fábio Luis Bonello,Maurício Franco Zanette,Silvia Helena Venturoli Perri,Mary Marcondes Feitosa +8 more
TL;DR: The treatment of canine visceral leishmaniasis promoted clinical cure but did not eliminate the parasites completely, resulting in the presence of amastigote forms of the parasite evidenced in five of the seven dogs.
