Applications of metal–organic framework-derived materials in fuel cells and metal-air batteries

Designing metal–organic framework (MOF)-encapsulated hybrid catalysts is considered as an effective way to realize catalytic selectivity because of advantages related to the unique channels of MOF. Here, a sodium polystyrenesulfonate (PSS)-induced, microwave-assisted route was developed to controllably construct Pt/CeO2@MOF core@shell hybrids. Using PSS as a modifying agent and followed by microwave assistance, MOFs could be continuously grown in an oriented manner on Pt/CeO2 nanospheres. The obtained Pt-CeO2@UIO-66-NH2 exhibited high conversion (99.3%) with high selectivity (>99%) for selective hydrogenation of furfural to furfuryl alcohol. It showed that the CeO2 would promote the catalytic activity, whereas the size confinement effect of the UIO-66-NH2 channels can enhance the catalytic selectivity. This work highlights a useful strategy toward the universal synthesis of highly active, stable, and selective catalysts for further utilization.

Pt/CeO2@MOF Core@Shell Nanoreactor for Selective Hydrogenation of Furfural via the Channel Screening Effect

The selective hydrogenation of α, β-unsaturated aldehyde is an extremely important transformation, while developing efficient catalysts with desirable selectivity to highly value-added products is challenging, mainly due to the coexistence of two conjugated unsaturated functional groups. Herein, we report that a series of Pt-based zigzag nanowires (ZNWs) can be adopted as selectivity controllers for α, β-unsaturated aldehyde hydrogenation, where the excellent unsaturated alcohol (UOL) selectivity (>95%) and high saturated aldehyde (SA) selectivity (>94%) are achieved on PtFe ZNWs and PtFeNi ZNWs+AlCl3, respectively. The excellent UOL selectivity of PtFe ZNWs is attributed to the lower electron density of the surface Pt atoms, while the high SA selectivity of PtFeNi ZNWs+AlCl3 is due to synergy between PtFeNi ZNWs and AlCl3, highlighting the importance of Pt-based NWs with precisely controlled surface and composition for catalysis and beyond.

Ceria-Based Materials for Thermocatalytic and Photocatalytic Organic Synthesis

Ultrathin (Pt-enriched cage)@CeO2 core@shell nanostructures are successfully fabricated via a facile hard-template method. It is found that the usage of Pd@Ag@CeO2 bi-metallic core@shell nanostructure as the hard template plays an important role in avoiding the independent nucleation of Pt metal during the galvanic replacement process between K2 PtCl4 and Ag components. This unique core@shell samples show extraordinary activity and selectivity for the cinnamaldehyde hydrogenation reaction. It can achieve over 95% conversion with 87% selectivity of hydrocinnamaldehyde in 5 h under 1 atm H2 pressure. It is considered that such high catalytic performance could be attributed to the densely CeO2 -coated core@shell hybrid form as well as the ultrathin nature of the Pt-enriched cage.
