Research has considered phonemic awareness skill as effective pillar in acquiring literacy skills. This skill has been identified as prerequisite for reading success However, little is known about the phonemic awareness instruction of Jordanian EFL emergent readers. This study therefore explored the impact of phonemic awareness instruction on word recognition among Jordanian EFL emergent readers. In this study, the research instrument was semi-structured interviews. Seven EFL students of emergent readers were interviewed. They were all first graders aged 7 years on average. Data were analyzed using content analysis. The findings indicated that there is a lack of knowledge or misunderstanding between the term of phonics and phonemic awareness as well. It has been also found that emergent readers’ views show positive support towards the use of phonemic awareness skill. At the end of the study, some pedagogical implications for curriculum designers as well as English teachers were provided accordingly .

The influence of phonemic awareness instruction on efl emergent readers’ word recognition

The application of blended learning in higher education has practically increased through the years, this is however aimed to develop the students rare 21st century skills. Furthermore, the present study investigates the differences in learning process across one semester, and the research design comprised of quasi experimental method without conducting any pre-test, particularly for the conventional and blended learning class. Therefore, self-evaluation questionnaire on 21st century skills were distributed, and the experimental outcome revealed the significant skill practice performed by students in blended learning classes compared to the counterparts in conventional programmes. This learning method was assessed to contain soft and hard skills, in addition to an increased GPA. The aim of this study, therefore, is to investigate the impact of blended learning in course application, with the goal of optimizing students’ 21st century skills and GPA.

Students’ Practices of 21st Century Skills between Conventional learning and Blended Learning

The act of obeying parents' right to control them or refusing the directives by challenging their parents’ authority are two preferences children may opt for. This present investigation concerns to what extend children respond upon hearing negative utterances aimed for them. This qualitative research applies a theory of speech acts proposed by Austin (1962) to analyze data classified as negation utterances. Four families living at the Kartasura become this research data source. To collect the data, the researcher implements direct observation by recording audio and taking notes on the parents and their children's interaction within a period of approximately an hour. The result of the study implies that mostly Kartasura children do what their parents tell them to do, while few data indicate children's refusal of parents’ negations. One reason is due to the cultural value held tightly and bequeathed by Javanese through a number of centuries that is the act to honor and obey parents’ directives. To sum up, the implementation of negative utterances in the parenting world is not prohibited; however, parents must keep in mind the use of proper portion.

Penelitian ini berjudul Kajian Semiotika Charles Sanders Pierce: Relasi Trikotomi (Ikon, Indeks dan Simbol) Dalam Cerpen Anak Mercusuar Karya Mashdar Zainal. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis, menjelaskan dan mendeskripsikan unsur-unsur ikon, indeks dan simbol dalam cerpen Anak Mercusuar karya Mashdar Zainal. Bagaimana relasi antara tanda-tanda dalam cerpen tersebut, yang berupa ikon, indeks dan simbol, itulah yang ingin penulis jelaskan dan deskripsikan dalam penelitian ini. Metode yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah metode pustaka dengan menerapkan metode kualitatif. Sementara untuk teknik penulisan adalah deskriptif kualitatif, yang memaparkan pembahasan berdasarkan karya sastra. Data yang digunakan berupa teks cerpen Anak Mercusuar karya Mashdar Zainal. Hasil yang didapatkan berupa 4 tanda dalam bentuk ikon, 6 tanda dalam bentuk indeks, dan 3 tanda dalam bentuk simbol.

Kajian Semiotika Charles Sanders Pierce: Relasi Trikotomi (Ikon, Indeks dan Simbol) dalam Cerpen Anak Mercusuar Karya Mashdar Zainal

Background: The emergence of the Covid-19 pandemic led to the global change of academic learning strategy from classroom to online mode. Before the emergence of the virus, online learning at a medium scale has been implemented to support the educational system in Indonesia. However, due to the pandemic and to reduce the spread of the virus, online learning became the main and sole place of learning. Objective: This study investigates the implementation and effectiveness of online learning at the faculty of humanities at a University in Jambi, Indonesia, since the Covid-19 pandemic. Method: This is quantitative research. Self-report questionnaires with 5-point Likert scales were used to obtain data from 441 respondents by using the Survey Monkey application. Result: The result showed that online learning was not implemented at the top level of 4.20, using an inadequate replacement process. Furthermore, all categories of online learning implementation, such as design, course communication, time management, and technical skills, were not optimally obtained, while the categories were inadequately effective in replacing classroom learning. Conclusion: Online learning was unable to replace classroom learning because its implementation and effectiveness failed to meet policymakers’ expectations at the university level. Therefore, there is a need for the increase in teachers’ competence and usage intensity regarding online learning in faculties and universities.

The Effective Use of Full Online Learning to Replace Classroom Learning During the Covid-19 Pandemic

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menjelaskan bentuk tindak tutur direktif dan strategi bertutur yang digunakan oleh orang tua, serta respons verbal anak usia 5—6 tahun pada tindak tutur orang tua mereka. Metode yang digunakan adalah kualitatif deskriptif. Subjek penelitian adalah anak usia 5—6 tahun pada tahun 2012 dan orang tua mereka. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa bentuk tindak tutur direktif yang digunakan oleh orang tua adalah menyuruh, melarang, menyarankan, dan meminta. Respons verbal anak adalah anak memberikan respons positif terhadap tindak tutur menyuruh dengan strategi bertutur terus terang dengan basa-basi kesantunan positif dan kesantunan negatif; melarang dengan strategi bertutur terus terang dengan basa-basi kesantunan positif, kesantunan negatif, dan samar-samar; menyarankan dengan strategi bertutur terus terang tanpa basa-basi dan kesantunan negatif; dan meminta dengan strategi bertutur terus terang dengan basa-basi kesantunan positif. Sebaliknya, anak memberikan respons negatif terhadap tindak tutur menyuruh dengan strategi bertutur terus terang tanpa basa-basi dan samar-samar; melarang dengan strategi bertutur terus terang tanpa basa-basi; menyarankan dengan strategi bertutur terus terang dengan basa-basi kesantunan negatif; dan meminta dengan strategi bertutur terus terang tanpa basa-basi. Berdasarkan hasil penelitian, dapat disimpulkan bahwa sebaiknya orang tua tidak menggunakan strategi bertutur terus terang tanpa basa-basi untuk tindak tutur menyuruh, melarang, dan meminta. Sementara itu, untuk tindak tutur menyarankan, sebaiknya orang tua tidak menggunakan strategi bertutur terus terang dengan basa-basi kesantunan negatif karena anak memberikan respons negatif berupa penolakan.

Respons Verbal Anak Usia 5—6 Tahun pada Tindak Tutur Direktif Orang Tua

The Kerinci language is one of the regional languages in Indonesia that still lives and develops in the Kerinci community. The Kerinci community also uses language as a social control for their people, which is expressed in the form of expressions. The purpose of this study is to describe the traditional expression of the Kerinci community as art of speaks and moral values contained in the expression as a source of moral values for character education. The method used is descriptive qualitative. Based on the results of the study, traditional expressions as spoken art are attitudes of caution in conveying the intentions and objectives as well as the continuing meaning or meaning in the speech that makes the speech beautiful. The phrase as art of speech is used to prohibit, reprimand, advise, rule, punish, and state rules in the local community. In addition, this traditional expression as spoken art is also used in the Kenduri Seko traditional ceremonial procession. The moral values contained in the traditional expression of the Kerinci community are individual, social, and religious moral values. Examples of individual moral values are honest, open, responsible, obedient, disciplined, diligent. Examples of social moral values are being loyal, helping others, keeping promises, being friendly, polite, democratic, fair, considerate, compact. Examples of religious moral values are sincere, grateful, optimistic, do not confuse halal and haram, good and bad. These moral values can be used as a source of moral values for character education in educating young people as the next generation of this nation.

The Art of Speaking in the Traditional Expression of Kerinci Community as a Source of Moral Values for Character Education

Pemahaman mengenai makna ungkapan perlu dikaji dari perspektif semiotika sebagai ilmu tentang tanda. Makna Ungkapan dapat dipahami apabila relasi petanda dan penanda dapat dijelaskan. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk mendeskripsikan relasi petanda dan penanda dalam ungkapan tradisional masyarakat kerinci dari perspektif semiotika. Pendekatan yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah pendekatan kualitatif dengan metode deskriptif. Hasil penelitian adalah terdapatnya relasi petanda dan penanda yang bersifat simbolik. Relasi simbolik terjalin berdasarkan ersamaan-persamaan sifat, perilaku, perbuatan, keadaan, dan bentuk yang terdapat pada hewan, tumbuhan, alam, dan manusia.
