X-ray tomography measurements of power-law cluster size distributions for the nonwetting phase in sandstones

TL;DR: The size distribution of disconnected nonwetting phase clusters (ganglia) is determined, implying that clusters of all sizes provide a huge surface area for geochemical reactions and dissolution while allowing mobilization of the residual phase during improved oil recovery in hydrocarbon reservoirs and carbon dioxide storage in aquifers.
Journal ArticleDOI

Pore3D: A software library for quantitative analysis of porous media

TL;DR: The Pore3D software library developed by the SYRMEP research group of the Elettra Synchrotron Light Laboratory in Trieste (Italy) is presented and consists of several state-of-the-art functions and procedures for performing filtering, segmentation and quantitative analysis of 3D images.
Journal ArticleDOI

Vesiculation in magmas from Stromboli and implications for normal Strombolian activity and paroxysmal explosions in basaltic systems

TL;DR: In this article, a series of X-ray tomographic experiments and lattice Boltzmann permeability simulations on pyroclastic products from explosive activity at Stromboli between December 2004 and May 2006 were performed to investigate the relationship between the nature of vesiculation in erupted products and the dynamics of gas transport in the shallow conduit in order to derive implications for the eruptive behavior of basaltic volcanoes.
Journal ArticleDOI

Analysis of Hydraulic Permeability in Porous Media: From High Resolution X-ray Tomography to Direct Numerical Simulation

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors developed and applied a strategy for estimating the full tensor of hydraulic permeability of porous media, without any a priori assumption on the principal directions.
Journal ArticleDOI

The role of syn-eruptive vesiculation on explosive basaltic activity at Mt. Etna, Italy

TL;DR: The authors investigated the dynamics of explosive activity at Mt. Etna between 31 August and 15 December 2006 by combining vesicle studies in erupted products with measurements of the gas composition at the active, summit crater.
