Fluorescence intensity ratio technique for optical fiber point temperature sensing
TL;DR: In this paper, the temperature dependence of the fluorescence intensity ratio has been studied using thermally coupled energy levels in seven different rare earth ions doped into a variety of glasses and crystals.
Journal ArticleDOI
Comparison of fluorescence-based temperature sensor schemes: Theoretical analysis and experimental validation
Stephen F Collins,Gregory W Baxter,Scott A Wade,Tong Sun,Kenneth T. V. Grattan,Zhiyi Zhang,Andrew W. Palmer +6 more
TL;DR: In this article, the performance of two most promising fluorescence-based temperature sensing techniques, namely the fluorescence intensity ratio (FIR) and fluorescence lifetime (FL) schemes, have been compared.
Journal ArticleDOI
Metal-organic-framework-coated optical fibers as light-triggered drug delivery vehicles
Marziyeh Nazari,Marziyeh Nazari,Marta Rubio-Martinez,Gerard Tobias,Jorge Perez Barrio,Ravichandar Babarao,Fatemeh Nazari,Kristina Konstas,Benjamin W. Muir,Stephen F Collins,Anita J. Hill,Mikel Duke,Matthew R. Hill,Matthew R. Hill +13 more
TL;DR: Delivery of light of appropriate wavelength through the fiber catheter is found to trigger the release of 5‐FU on demand, offering a new route to localized drug administration.
Journal ArticleDOI
Nondestructive imaging of a type I optical fiber Bragg grating
Nicoleta Dragomir,Claire M Rollinson,Scott A Wade,Andrew J Stevenson,Stephen F Collins,Gregory W Baxter,Peter M. Farrell,Ann Roberts +7 more
TL;DR: Nondestructive images of refractive-index variation within a type I fiber Bragg grating have been recorded by the differential interference contrast imaging technique and reveal detailed structure that is consistent with the formation of Talbot planes in the diffraction pattern behind the phase mask.

Visible and near infra-red up-conversion in Tm3+/Yb3+ co-doped silica fibres under 980 nm excitation
David Simpson,Keith Gibbs,Stephen F Collins,Wilfried Blanc,Bernard Dussardier,Gérard Monnom,Pavel Peterka,Gregory W Baxter +7 more
TL;DR: The spectroscopic properties of Tm(3+)/Yb(3+) co-doped silica fibers under excitation at 980 nm are reported and three distinct up-conversion fluorescence bands were observed.
