Information pertaining to the stereochemistry of metalloporphyrins and other tetrapyrroles continues to expand. The present article reviews important developments of this structural chemistry. Detailed updates on the relationship of the structure and physical properties of iron derivatives are given. Metalloporphyrins with unusually high or low oxidation states are reviewed. Surveys of recent work on π-cation radical complexes, bound O2 species, tetrapyrroles with N-substituents, the stereochemistry of ring-reduced tetrapyrroles and a variety of novel species are given. Newly developed data concerning experimental electron density studies are summarized. Detailed reviews of porphyrin-porphyrin (π-π) interactions in the solid state are given. A variety of important conformational aspects of metalloporphyrins and their consequent results on physical properties are presented. Finally, a number of isomorphous series and crystal packing effects in tetrapyrroles have been detailed.

Recent advances in the stereochemistry of metallotetrapyrroles

Solutions of C60, C60O, or C70 and metal complexes of octaethylporphyrin (OEPH2) yield crystals that contain both the fullerene and the porphyrin. The structures of C60·2CoII(OEP)·CHCl3, C60·2ZnII(OEP)·CHCl3, and C60O·2CoII(OEP)·CHCl3 are isomorphous and contain an ordered C60 cage surrounded by two MII(OEP) units. Although there is no covalent bond between the fullerene and porphyrin components, the separation between these units is shorter than normal van der Waals contact. Crystals of C70·CoII(OEP)·C6H6·CHCl3, C70·NiII(OEP)·C6H6·CHCl3, and C70·CuII(OEP)·C6H6·CHCl3 are also isomorphous with an ordered fullerene, but have only one porphyrin/fullerene contact. Crystalline C60·ClFeIII(OEP)·CHCl3 lacks the close face-to-face porphyrin/porphyrin contact that is common to all of the other structures reported here but retains the intimate contact between the porphyrin and the fullerene. Interaction of Curved and Flat Molecular Surfaces. The Structures of Crystalline Compounds Composed of Fullerene (C60, C60O, C70, and C120O) and Metal Octaethylporphyrin Units

Transmetalation of Unsaturated Carbon Nucleophiles from Boron-Containing Species to the Mid to Late d-Block Metals of Relevance to Catalytic C−X Coupling Reactions (X = C, F, N, O, Pb, S, Se, Te)

Iron- and nitrogen-doped carbon (Fe-N-C) materials are leading candidates to replace platinum catalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in fuel cells; however, their active site structures remain poorly understood. A leading postulate is that the iron-containing active sites exist primarily in a pyridinic Fe-N4 ligation environment, yet, molecular model catalysts generally feature pyrrolic coordination. Herein, we report a molecular pyridinic hexaazacyclophane macrocycle, (phen2N2)Fe, and compare its spectroscopic, electrochemical, and catalytic properties for ORR to a typical Fe-N-C material and prototypical pyrrolic iron macrocycles. N 1s XPS and XAS signatures for (phen2N2)Fe are remarkably similar to those of Fe-N-C. Electrochemical studies reveal that (phen2N2)Fe has a relatively high Fe(III/II) potential with a correlated ORR onset potential within 150 mV of Fe-N-C. Unlike the pyrrolic macrocycles, (phen2N2)Fe displays excellent selectivity for four-electron ORR, comparable to Fe-N-C materials. The aggregate spectroscopic and electrochemical data demonstrate that (phen2N2)Fe is a more effective model of Fe-N-C active sites relative to the pyrrolic iron macrocycles, thereby establishing a new molecular platform that can aid understanding of this important class of catalytic materials. Iron- and nitrogen-doped carbon materials are effective catalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction whose active sites are poorly understood. Here, the authors establish a new pyridinic iron macrocycle complex as a more effective active site model relative to legacy pyrrolic model complexes.
