The Synthesis and Ion Bindings of Synthetic Multidentate Macrocyclic Compounds.

More than a quarter of a century after the first metal template synthesis of a [2]catenane in Strasbourg, there now exists a plethora of strategies available for the construction of mechanically bonded and entwined molecular level structures. Catenanes, rotaxanes, knots and Borromean rings have all been successfully accessed by methods in which metal ions play a pivotal role. Originally metal ions were used solely for their coordination chemistry; acting either to gather and position the building blocks such that subsequent reactions generated the interlocked products or by being an integral part of the rings or "stoppers" of the interlocked assembly. Recently the role of the metal has evolved to encompass catalysis: the metal ions not only organize the building blocks in an entwined or threaded arrangement but also actively promote the reaction that covalently captures the interlocked structure. This Review outlines the diverse strategies that currently exist for forming mechanically bonded molecular structures with metal ions and details the tactics that the chemist can utilize for creating cross-over points, maximizing the yield of interlocked over non-interlocked products, and the reactions-of-choice for the covalent capture of threaded and entwined intermediates.

Light-emitting molecular devices based on transition metals

The existence of synthetic macrocyclic molecules with hydrophilic cavities containing multiple binding atoms and with hydrophobic exteriors gives rise to extraordinary possibilities with respect to the design and synthesis of molecules with specific cation and anion binding properties. The preparation of many new macrocyclic compounds has recently been reported, but few practical applications for them have been suggested. From the information available, it is becoming clear that it should be possible to synthesize macrocycles that will have specified, or selected, ion binding properties. Cavity size can be varied to accommodate only those cations or anions within a specified narrow band of sizes. Numbers and types of coordinating atoms can be chosen to give essentially electrostatic or covalent bonding or a combination of the two in a metalmacrocycle complex. The metal ligand bond appears to be predominantly ionic in the case of the cyclic polyethers but the covalent character increases on substitution of sulfur or nitrogen for oxygen donor atoms. The essential hydrophobic exteriors of the macrocycles can be modified by the addition of side chains and groups to facilitate the solution of anions and cations in organic solvents. The structures of many macrocycles can be made to approximate naturally occurring molecules, that is, cyclic polyethers similar to macrocyclic antibiotics of the valinomycin and nonactin types and cyclic polyamines similar to porphyrins. Macrocycles are also useful as model compounds for the study of metal interactions with biological systems. The synthetic macrocycles thus represent an intriguing new area of coordination chemistry, the systematic study of which should lead to many interesting and useful chemical applications in the field of metal complexation in solution.

Ion binding by synthetic macrocyclic compounds.

Pt(trpy)Cl+, where trpy denotes 2,2‘:6‘,2‘ ‘-terpyridine, is a versatile binding agent but has a limited photochemistry due to a short excited-state lifetime. However, this work shows that the introduction of aryl substituents at the 4‘ position of the trpy ligand drastically alters the picture. For the substituents phenyl, p-methoxyphenyl, 1-naphthyl, 2-naphthyl, 9-phenanthrenyl, and 1-pyrenyl, the ligand abbrevations are 4‘-Ph-T, 4‘-pMeOPh-T, 4‘-Npl-T, 4‘-Np2-T, 4‘-Phe9-T, and 4‘-Pyre1-T, respectively. Techniques utilized include electrochemistry as well as absorption and emission spectroscopies. While the lowest energy excited states of Pt(4‘-Ph-T)Cl+ and the parent complex Pt(trpy)Cl+ exhibit mainly metal-to-ligand charge-transfer (MLCT) character, the emitting state takes on aryl-to-trpy intraligand charge-transfer (ILCT) character as the substituents become more electron-donating.
