This book by a teacher of statistics (as well as a consultant for \"experimenters\") is a comprehensive study of the philosophical background for the statistical design of experiment. It is necessary to have some facility with algebraic notation and manipulation to be able to use the volume intelligently. The problems are presented from the theoretical point of view, without such practical examples as would be helpful for those not acquainted with mathematics. The mathematical justification for the techniques is given. As a somewhat advanced treatment of the design and analysis of experiments, this volume will be interesting and helpful for many who approach statistics theoretically as well as practically. With emphasis on the \"why,\" and with description given broadly, the author relates the subject matter to the general theory of statistics and to the general problem of experimental inference. The Design and Analysis of Experiments

Tactile sensors, most commonly referred as strain and pressure sensors, can collect mechanical property data of the human body and local environment, to provide valuable insights into the human health status or artificial intelligence systems. The introduction of a high level of wearability (bendability and stretchability) to tactile sensors can dramatically enhance their interfaces with the contact objects, providing chronically reliable functions. Therefore, the developed wearable tactile sensors are capable of conformably covering arbitrary curved surface over their stiff counterparts without incurring damage, emerging as a promising development direction toward the Internet of Things (IoT) applications. Fundamental parameters of the wearable tactile sensors such as sensitivity and stretchability have experienced unprecedented advancement, owing to the progress of device fabrication techniques and material structural engineering. Moreover, novel smart materials and mechanically durable sensor design concepts endow these sensors with multi-functionality integration (e.g., simultaneous force, temperature and humidity detection, simultaneous pressure and strain discrimination) and stirring properties (e.g., biocompatibility, biodegradability, self-healing, self-powering and visualization), further broadening the application scope of current wearable tactile sensors. Besides, it is desirable that a tactile sensor is compatible with a printing process that presents a new era of feasible wearable technology due to its large-area and high-throughput production capability. In addition to the development of sensors, packaging, and integration of the rest of the tactile device system (data memory, signal conversion, power supply, wireless transmission, feedback actuator, etc.) to build a wearable platform also emerge as major research frontiers in recent years. This review attempts to summarize the current state-of-the-art wearable tactile sensors concerning basic concepts, functional materials, sensing mechanism, promising applications, performance optimization strategies, multifunctional sensing, and system integration. Finally, the discussion will be presented regarding potential challenges, pathways, and opportunities.

Recent advances in wearable tactile sensors: Materials, sensing mechanisms, and device performance

Nature's color has three main sources: pigments, structural colors and bioluminescence. Structural color is a special one, which is the color produced by micro- or nano-structures, and is bright and dazzling. The most common mechanisms of structural colors are film interference, diffraction grating, scattering and photonic crystals. Biological colors are mainly derived from film interference, which includes thin-film and multi-film interference. The diffraction grating mechanism is found in, for example, seed shrimp, mollusk Haliotis Glabra and the Hibiscus trionum flower. Scattering includes coherent and incoherent scattering. Well-known examples of coherent scattering include colors produced by brilliant iridescent butterfly wing scales and avian feather barbules, such as the peacock's tail. Examples of colors produced by photonic crystal structures include opal in beetles and iridescent spines in the sea mouse. Coloration changes occur through structural changes for camouflage, predation, signal communication and sex choice. This paper presents an overview of lessons from nature and various relevant mechanisms. Examples of bioinspired fabrication methods and applications are also presented in this paper.

Structural coloration in nature

A novel water-induced shape memory polymer based on polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) was prepared by introducing graphene oxide (GO). Due to the strong hydrogen bonding interaction between PVA and GO, some additional physically cross-linked points could be formed in PVA, which largely improved shape memory properties of PVA. Solvent-induced shape memory behavior was observed by immersing PVA/GO nanocomposites in water. The water-induced shape recovery was due to the decrease of glass transition temperature and storage modulus. This could be explained by the swelling plasticizing effect of water on PVA, as indicated by the obvious expansion in volume of PVA. On the other hand, the weakened hydrogen bonding between PVA and GO was also observed after immersing the PVA/GO nanocomposites in water. Thus both the plasticizing effect and the competitive hydrogen bonding were the two main reasons for the shape recovery of PVA/GO nanocomposites. This study provides a framework for developing new shape memory polymers (SMPs) and for better understanding the shape recovery mechanism in solvent-induced SMPs.

Water-induced shape memory effect of graphene oxide reinforced polyvinyl alcohol nanocomposites

The piezoelectric effect in poly(vinylidene fluoride), PVDF, was discovered over four decades ago and since then, significant work has been carried out aiming at the production of high β-phase fibres and their integration into fabric structures for energy harvesting. However, little work has been done in the area of production of “true piezoelectric fabric structures” based on flexible polymeric materials such as PVDF. In this work, we demonstrate “3D spacer” technology based all-fibre piezoelectric fabrics as power generators and energy harvesters. The knitted single-structure piezoelectric generator consists of high β-phase (∼80%) piezoelectric PVDF monofilaments as the spacer yarn interconnected between silver (Ag) coated polyamide multifilament yarn layers acting as the top and bottom electrodes. The novel and unique textile structure provides an output power density in the range of 1.10–5.10 μW cm−2 at applied impact pressures in the range of 0.02–0.10 MPa, thus providing significantly higher power outputs and efficiencies over the existing 2D woven and nonwoven piezoelectric structures. The high energy efficiency, mechanical durability and comfort of the soft, flexible and all-fibre based power generator are highly attractive for a variety of potential applications such as wearable electronic systems and energy harvesters charged from the ambient environment or by human movement.

Study of three-dimensional spacer fabrics : physical and mechanical properties

Currently, foam molding technologies are widely adopted for most bra styles, which demonstrate the incomparable advantages in the contemporary intimate apparel industry. The determination of proper molding conditions, such as molding temperatures and length of time on the basis of cup sizes and styles, is crucial in achieving the required cup shape with high stability, which is regarded as the most challenging part of the molded bra making process. To determine the optimal process parameter settings, numerous process trials are generally required to evaluate the molding variables and their interactions. This study proposes a novel systematic methodology to identify the optimal molding process parameters based on design of experiment (DOE) and a parameterization-based remesh method to evaluate the 3D shape conformity of molded cups. By solving the regression equation obtained from a Box-Behnken design (BBD) and analyzing the response surface plots, the results prove that molding temperature has greater influence than the length of the dwell time on the 3D shape conformity of molded cups. The optimal molding conditions can be determined for the cup depths of different sized mold heads, which are validated by the experimental results.
