The present paper is the first comprehensive review of the integration of phase change materials in building walls. Many considerations are discussed in this paper including physical considerations about building envelope and phase change material, phase change material integration and thermophysical property measurements and various experimental and numerical studies concerning the integration. Even if the integrated phase change material have a good potential for reducing energy demand, further investigations are needed to really assess their use.

Fabrication and properties of microcapsules and nanocapsules containing n-octadecane

Crystallization and prevention of supercooling of microencapsulated n-alkanes

A series of microcapsules containing n-octadecane with a urea-melamine-formaldehyde copolymer shell were synthesized by in-situ polymerization. The surface morphology, diameter, melting and crystallization properties, and thermal stability of the microcapsules were investigated by using FTIR, SEM, DSC, TGA and DTA. The diameters of the microcapsules are in the range of 0.2–5.6 μm. The n-octadecane contents in the microcapsules are in the range of 65–78wt%. The mole ratio of urea-melamine has been found to have no effect on the melting temperature of the microcapsules. Two crystallization peaks on the DSC cooling curve have been observed. The thermal damage mechanisms are the liquefied n-octadecane leaking from the microcapsule and breakage of the shell due to the mismatch of thermal expansion of the core and shell materials at high temperatures. The thermal stability of materials can be enhanced up to 10 °C by the copolymerization of urea, melamine and formaldehyde in a mole ratio 0.2:0.8:3. The thermal stability of 160 °C heat-treated microcapsules containing 8.8% cyclohexane can be further enhanced up to approximately 37 °C.

Structure and thermal stability of microencapsulated phase-change materials

This study contributes to enhancing students’ learning experience and increasing their understanding of complex issues by incorporating an augmented reality (AR) mobile application (app) into a sewing workshop in which a threading task was carried out to facilitate better learning relative to a conventional approach. Participants included 46 freshmen. One group of students was provided with a handout, while the other was asked to view an AR video. Questionnaires were then administered, and the results showed a significant difference between the two groups in terms of their understanding of the task. This finding was consistent with the post-test scores and the time required to learn the threading task. Several feedback items indicated higher learning efficiency with the use of AR videos.

Improving quality of teaching and learning in classes by using augmented reality video

The thermo-regulated sheath/core composite fibers containing 4–24 wt% of microencapsulated n-octadecane (MicroPCMs) were melt-spun with a 24-holes spinneret at a speed of 720 m/min. The polyethylene chips containing 10–60 wt% of MicroPCMs were used as the core and polypropylene chips were used as the sheath. The morphologies and properties of the chips and fibers were investigated by using SEM, DSC, WAXD and Melting Index tester etc. The microcapsules in the chips containing 10–40 wt% of MicroPCMs are evenly inserted inside the polymer matrix and their respective phase change temperatures are almost the same. The enthalpies rise steadily as the content of MicroPCMs increased from 10 wt% to 40 wt%. The efficiency of enthalpy of the chip containing more than 30 wt% MicroPCMs depends on the extruding procedure. For the same MicroPCMs content, the efficiency of enthalpy of the chip fabricated directly with MicroPCMs and polyethylene are significantly lower than that of the chips fabricated with polyethylene, MicroPCMs and chips containing MicroPCMs by progressively increase the MicroPCMs contents. Nonetheless, the spinnability of the chips decrease as the contents of MicroPCMs exceed 50 wt%. The micrographs of the spun fibers containing 4–24 wt% of MicroPCMs also indicate that the core of the fibers was evenly surrounded by the sheath component. The heat absorbing and evolving temperatures of the fibers remain unchanged with the increase of MicroPCMs content and keep at approximately 32 and 15∘C, respectively. The enthalpy, tensile strength and strain of the fiber containing 20 wt% of MicroPCMs are 11J/g, 1.8cN/dtex and 30.2%, respectively. The spun fibers can be used for the production of fabric materials.
